Hiya Everyone,

I have two guinea pigs and when I was cleaning them out yesterday they had floor time on my tiled kitchen and I noticed a little puddle of pinky wee, so I went and had a look on the newspaper and it was there too, one patch a bit darker but still only light. I was pretty sure it was Molly as she was sitting near the wees both times I saw but it could still be Bella my other guinea. Anyways I took them both to the vet, who said it could be two things - stones or UTI. She said we'll treat for UTI and then if it doesn't improve we'll x-ray.

My vet said I should do a check just to make sure which guinea it was, I did this and separated them but when I did this they both did normal coloured wee. What does this mean? I haven't given either of the guineas the medicine because I don't want to give them something they don't need. I am going to separate them both again today and have a wee inspection.

Just to add they both seem absolutely fine in themselves, eating, drinking, running round like normal!

Ooh tough one but sometimes a piggy will 'cry' when peeing/pooing if it's a UTI and there will be blood stains...sounds as though your vet is being cautionary and can understand you don't want to give meds. unless necessary :(
I would personally continue to monitor both girls closely, can you pop them onto a white fleece/towel etc. ?
When my Harley had a UTI/Cystitis, he hunched his back when pooing so keep an eye open for these symptoms - it may just be something they have eaten that has discoloured their urine. Carrots, beetroot etc. can have this effect so if they have eaten, these could be the culprit.
Are they drinking well too ?
 
They both seem to be drinking fine, I do have some cream coloured fleece to put them on I will try that, thanks :) As you say I think I've just got to just keep a close eye on them - I will keep you updated.

The urine can have been either discoloured by something they have eaten. Or it can be the very early stages of an UTI (urinary tract infection) when pees are only occasionally coloured, and the pink ones may not even have blood - I have been there myself! It can be very frutstrating!

At the moment, just keep a eye on the piggies for the next few days. Things will either go back to normal or will develop into a diagnostible UTI. Keep a nose out for the smell of stale pee, increased peeing/drinking other than bloody patches.

If you suspect UTI, please ask for septrin (the UK version for the bactrim mentioned in the link) rather than baytril and metacam for the first painful acute days. Please ask for a three week course of antibiotics, as UTI can be persistent and come back after just a short course.
