Henry is my newest addition, we got him on May 30th and he is now approx 11.5 weeks old.

I have noticed today that above his lip (but below his nose) looks rather sore :(

The flash on the picture makes it look a little worse than it does in person, it isn't quite so orange.

His diet consists of;
  • Water
  • Orchard Grass
  • Wagg Optimum pellets with a little Pets at Home nuggets mixed in (this is what he was on previously)
  • Veggies; Cucumber, carrot, peppers (all colours), trimmed beans, babycorn to begin with but he barely touched it so I stopped, and tomato for the first time yesterday, I didn't give it today

I have read that apples can cause sores on some pigs, so we have never given it to any of our piggles. Are there any other foods that cause it? Could it be the tomato?

If it isn't food related, what could it be? It has only come on within the last 24hours. I am going to try to get him in at the vets tomorrow but is there anything I can do in the meantime?

All advice is appriciated 8...

Looks like a tomato thing to me. Same as apples they cause those sores. How old is he? He's only small isn't he or I'd suggest that galen garden stuff. Not sure he can have that.

Shame - does he love them?

Phew! Thanks girlies! Thats eased my mind a bit :) I'll give him a clean and put some cream in tonight. No more tomato for him! If no improvement I'll take him to the vet. xx

Hello
This is just how my diego looked a couple of weeks ago. Mine do have apples now and again but don't like tomatoes, I am leaning towards believing that it is a virus, I think the vet called it chillitis? He looks a lot worse today as the scabs are at either side of his mouth. I hopw Henry gets better soon and it was just the food
best wishes Caroline

I agree that cheilitis came to mind, if it doesn't clear up in a day or two (which it should if it's caused by food) then you could visit vet but also see what Chrissie at GG recommends. I'm sure one or other of her lotions 'n' potions would do the trick. :)

GG is fab.

Urgh those pictures are pretty grim. My piggie had the beginings of what looked like that. I put some GG lotion on and that was that. It was the apple I think. Fingers crossed yours is just the food too xx

It looks like cheilitis (inflammation of the lips) to me, too.

Here is more information: http://www.guinealynx.info/cheilitis.html

I'd never heard of this before, thank you for the heads up/links etc. I really hope it's not 8...

A couple of questions - Is it contagious to other piggies (he's on his own at the moment but I handle all of them) or to humans? If it is cheilitis and is treated, is it something that will be recurring? Poor little Henry :( I feel terrible.

I bought some Sudocrem at lunch time - am I ok applying this? What's best to clean the area with?

How would he have got it?
