So I posted this morning about sadly having Naira put to sleep and have just noticed there is fresh bloody wee in their cage. I've done some investigating and it's Henry. He's not squeaking at all when passing urine. Do you think it could have happened because he's upset about Naira?

He's not on his own, I still have him and Beryl but it seems such a strange coincidence. I posted on here a while ago as he needed to have a hernia operation and the only other time he's had a urinary infection was after that. When I contacted the vets, Ellie Whitehead said this can happen when they get stressed.
I will see if I can speak with her tomorrow.

Hi!

I am very sorry!

The pee is likely porphyrine coloured and could mean the very onset of a UTI or cystitis. it can well be that the loss of his beloved mate has lowered his immune system enough to come down with it.

Contact your vet next week during regular opening hours for an antibiotic and an analgesic (metacam).

So sorry you have to cope with this as well as losing Naira.
Hope a vet can deal with Henry quickly

Can i have some advice please as Henry is still not 100%.

He has been prescribed Loxicom over the phone and is much brighter in himself but his urine is smelling very strongly so the vet recommended Septrin. The practice has put this in the post and it arrived today, but it is Sulfatrim.

I've done a search on here and have found out that this is an adult version of Septrin and double the strength. I will phone the practice and double check the dosage on Mon but I wanted to start him on it today really. I'm a bit worried as they have sent me the whole bottle (rather than decanting some off) with a dosage of 0.4ml twice per day. I'm a bit worried about giving him too much so thinking I might just do half of this until the practice is open on Mon and I can double check.

Any thoughts please? Could there be negative side effects if the dosage is too high?

MIne have had sulfatrim. And the amounts have varied according to their weight. What does he weigh?

I would give it to him as prescribed, but if you are worried, check when the vets are open again that the dosage is correct. I’m not saying it is, or that it is isn’t. I’ve just checked some old bottles (I keep the empty bottles not the old meds - as they are useful for mixing up cystease etc) and the old labels for the adult version are similar for other piggies I’ve had in my care. So I’m not unduly alarmed.
