Gladys and Pippin have herbs every day ... Dill for dinner and coriander at breakfast... I am always running out and sick of going to the supermarket mid week and spending too much on other things that jump into my trolley...
So, thinking of buying a bit more and freezing it.... Anyone know if this is ok ? I am not a great cook so thought would ask lol !

Hiya,

You can freeze herbs but not for guinea pigs - only for your own consumption. All types of veggies and herbs should not be fed to guinea pigs if they have been frozen as the process of freezing affects the nutritional value of the veg etc, so only fresh for piggies.

Thank you... better not stock up today then.. its not that i have a problem buying them fresh, well it took me 4 different shops last week to find some dill!

I know what you mean ! I've tried growing my own but don't have much success - particularly in the winter. I buy the living herbs and, fortunately , my local supermarket isn't too far away. I have to be very disciplined and not buy extras while I am there too !

i tried growing some dill... it got infested with flies so went in the bin !! Must try harder just to get what i need in the shops lol ! Must also try them with other herbs incase one isn't available..

I feel your pain. I have to go to the supermarket every few days as well to get veges for my rabbits and piggies and that is all I feel like I do most days.

Not to mention that every time I am in the shop I also spend money that I did not want to and no matter what I do I cannot seem to stop myself

Have you thought of drying them ? tie them into bunches and hang them upside down
in a cool shed or cool room in your house

We'll have to start a shopaholics thread

I think we will need to organise a support group :lol!:

I thought it was just my trolley that did this!

I think it is some sort of strange phenomena that happens when the trolleys head towards the checkouts. All of a sudden you look down into your trolley to discover all these items that have mysteriously appeared :yikes: :xd:

Ha ha.. glad its just not me ! I went shopping today and spent £125 ! But i did buy some bits to put away for xmas..... and 4 bottles of Appletise cos i love it and it was on offer ...

It's those offers that do it they just jump into the trolley when no one's looking. I've started using a basket now when just out for piggie veg it saves getting too tempted by lots of heavy stuff!

that's a good idea for preserving herbs - but, I prefer to give my guinea pigs fresh herbs.
