It really is never ending. Here was me saying, all my boys are finally all well for the first time in 6 months..... well that didn't last long.

I found blood in Nibbler's cage this evening when I was sweeping him out. One patch of it, about the size of a 20 pence coin and another like strip of it. I took him out straight away and checked him all over and there's not a mark on him. So my assumption is, that he's peeing blood. I weighed him and he had lost roughly 30g since Monday but my scales have been playing up a little bit of late, so that might be wrong.

I've given him 30ml of critical care and I'm going to keep a close eye on him until I can see the vet on Monday. He seems otherwise alright. He's happy, alert, eating, drinking and pooping... which is a good sign I suppose.

It's just so frustrating as he had a bladder stone at the start of the year and has been on a strict diet since.

It just feels like it's never-ending and it makes me so sad. 8...

What would you say is best for detecting stones, etc... x-ray or ultrasound?

I'm not going to mess around, I'm planning on getting an x-ray or ultrasound done asap...to hopefully rule out a stone!
 
i so know where you are coming from i had this when i had my beloved pepper, really hoping nibbles is ok hon, sending some vibes xx
 
It depends on your vet - if they are better at reading Ultra-sounds or Xrays. Me and Patrick sympathise.

Aww... Poor Nibbler. I suppose a X-Ray would be better (not that I have any experience?/) Good Luck though!
 
I would probably suggest both to get all bases covered. We had both when we were trying to rule out stones. Luckily no stones were found but the ultrasound did pick up a ovarian cyst and inflamed bladder wall - were the x-ray did not.

Sending healing vibes to Nibbler, hope he gets well soon.
 
Ohhhh I'm so sorry to hear that Nibble has lost weight and you've found blood in the cage :( I hope the vets goes well on Monday and you find out the cause of his weight loss, lots of chin tickles and healing vibes to Nibbler get well soon little one xxxxxxx
 
Thanks for all the good wishes, etc.

Nibbler has improved - his weight has gone back up a bit and there's no more blood in the cage. Also had him pee on a white towel and there was no blood there. Also, he isn't wheeking when he pees or poos so it's all a bit of a mystery.

We're keeping a very close eye on him and are going to make a decision regarding going into the vets tomorrow.
 
The only thing i would say to you is, when i had pepper and he was going through the start of his bladder stones phase, he started peeing blood, but it wasnt all the time, i dont mean to scare you, but it was hit and miss from memory, so it may be best to check him out?

Yup, I'm not 100% sure it's bladder related to be honest. He's had bladder problems before which turned out to be a bladder stone and he's not showing any of the same symptoms.

I'm keeping a close eye on him and will be making a decision tomorrow.
 
I'm off to the vets tomorrow I have a piggie that has been peeing blood on and off for a year and he has been on bayril twice.

He is going for an xray to rule out stones as I don't think it is just an infection as it's not going away:(

Will be going to the vets tomorrow. I found more blood in the cage and his weight has dropped. Poor wee guy.

Thanks for all the wishes of good luck.

I spoke to the vet and he's fully booked today but he was going to get some Septrin in for me and possibly some Cystease for me to pick up tonight. Then I'm to take Nibbler in at 5.10pm on Friday for an ultrasound. Then we'll take things from there. If the ultrasound doesn't give us a good enough view, then he'll be x-rayed next week and if there is a stone, the vet will take it out there and then.

The only thing is, I'm going down to Gretna with one of my other pigs to see Becky at Becklen Guinea Pig Rescue to pair Fry up with one of the little guys there. We're staying overnight in a hotel and luckily they accept pets, as I don't want to leave Nibbler whilst we're away. Would it be ok if he was in a large carrier i.e. cat or dog carrier for the day and night? I would take a small playpen with us so he could have a run around when we're in the hotel room, just I wouldn't want to leave him unattended in it.
 
awww poor nibbler, fingers crossed for him. I would definately take mine with me if they were poorly no matter what.

Went to the vets this evening and Nibbler had an ultrasound done. Got a very good view of the bladder and their is a very tiny stone there. We are going to keep him on the Septrin, Metacam and Cystaid for the next 3 weeks. Then come back for another ultrasound.

After last time, when Nibbler passed a rather large stone, we are thinking he may pass this one as it's so tiny.

However, if he doesn't pass it in the coming weeks or goes down hill, then he will be operated on.
 
how is nibbler doing? i only just realised i hadnt seen a post from you about your vet visit. These stones are a damn nuisance arent they?

Have you been to Gretna yet?
 
Well, thankfully Nibbler managed to pass the stone as the latest scan showed his bladder was all clear. Still giving him the Cystaid.

However, he now has lice! :( It's just one thing after another. He's had a dose of Xeno and we're just awaiting some Lice n Easy shampoo arriving from Gorgeous Guineas.

I'm just hoping we've caught it before the others have been infected. I've checked them all and can't see anything but just got to keep an eye on them all.

Yup, we went to Gretna and came home with little Louie, who is Fry's new friend. Thankfully, Nibbler travelled pretty well.
 
Glad to hear he passed the stone :) Shame about the lice though.....how do piggies get lice?

Well Nibbler has been clear of the lice for a few weeks but I've come home to find blood in his cage again! This is breaking my heart and I don't want him to suffer like this 8...
 
Sorry to hear that Nibbler is unwell again. You obviously know how best to look into this (unfortunately, as it's happened before) so I just wanted to wish you both all the very best xx
 
Found some more blood again today. I'm going to start him on Septrin and Metacam until I can talk to the vet on Monday.

I just don't know why he keeps having these problems. I'm doing my best with diet and everything.
 
Is Nibbler still on the Cystaid? Just wondering what kind of diet he's on and what type of drinking water he has? (tap, filtered or bottled)

Even with dietary changes, some pigs are simply just more prone to this type of problem so please don't be too hard on yourself x
 
Yeah, he's still on the Cystaid.

I'm using the Calcium : Phosphorous ratio to do his food. He gets tap water, up in Aberdeen we have very soft water that isn't full of all the nasties.

Yeah, I think he may be one of those piggies prone to these problems. I just hate to think of him suffering.

Also, how do you suggest bladder stones, grit, etc are diagnosed without the use of ultrasound and x-rays?
