Here we go again... :(

Well.... Nibbler is still having problems. The vet and I have run out of options and it's come to the point where we had to make the hard decision that the vet will open him up and take a bladder biopsy. This isn't a decision we've taken lightly.

He's booked in for next Tuesday. I'm to drop him off at 9am and pick him up again late afternoon. I'm so nervous about it but I can't let Nibbler carry on suffering like this, without knowing the cause.

Poor Nibbler, hope it goes okay. *hugs*

I know the feeling Cat, Patrick is off to the vet's again next week was telling the reception this is his last appointment as I'm just going to give up LOL..

Which isn't true but I most certainly do feel like given up, he's happy besides the fact he passing blood daily :(.

What's Nibbler's symptoms just now? X

Forgot to add, I think your doing the right thing for Nibbler. We'll be thinking about him on Tuesday. x

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Jo, he's back to peeing blood and his weight is dropping again. I've also noticed that he seems to be holding in his pee for as long as possible before peeing.

He's been scanned several times to check for stones, sludge, etc. Done urine tests and stuff, yet we still don't know what the problem is.

My vet has been onto the exotic specialists at the Edinburgh Vet School and they are stumped too. Hence the decision to do the biopsy. They've suggested having a look at the prostate as well, so the vet is going to try and do that when they've got him open to do the biopsy.

It's so draining isn't it?! I hate seeing him suffer. It does get to the point where you think, where/when do you stop? I don't want to give up on him but I don't want him to be suffering either. I guess I just have to wait and see what the results of the biopsy are and take it from there.

I know the feeling to well, only thing Patrick has is an inflamed bladder no longer any crystals or stones. No reason why he passes blood everyday just what he does.

We also did a urine culture which was sterile ( no infection), I have him permanently on Cystease and syringe additional fluids but he cries daily.

Going back to the vet next week - was going to ask the vet about steroid injections to try and bring down the inflammation.

Just a nightmare - I totally feel your pain. Everything crossed for a reason and something that can be treated!

x

Well, today is the day. Just about to leave to take him to the vets. I'm so nervous, I feel sick. Good luck little Nibbler!

Thinking of you and Nibbler today x Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for all the good vibes everyone.

Nibbler is home and is feeling very sorry for himself.

The op went well and he came round well from the anaesthetic.

The decision was made to castrate him whilst he was opened up. Really trying to cover all bases.

The next few days are going to be rather stressful but hopefully he pulls through fine.

This is really interesting who's idea was it to neuter him?

The vets. He wanted to rule out anything to do with his 'sex' organs causing it. I was happy to go along with the decision as I trust the vet.

That's really interesting I was considering that for Patrick but was advised to proceed with caution, as Patrick is around 5 and weighs less 900 grams - we also thought in his case it wouldn't help but we don't really know and I opted against trying it.

Yeah, I can understand the caution regarding it. The vet only decided to do it as he was opening him up anyways... otherwise it would have been a last resort. It was done through the abdomen and not making more incisions.

Nibbler seems a bit brighter now and is actually moving about a bit. We just need to make sure he is peeing, otherwise it may mean his bladder hasn't sealed properly after the biopsy.

Just caught up with this thread. I'm sorry Nibbler has been so poorly, I can sympathise with you having been through it myself with Thelma. Sending healing wheeks for a speedy recovery and hugs to you x

Well Nibbler has had to go back to the vets today. He wasn't eating much and was doing really small poos. Unfortunately I have to work today, so the decision was made between me and the vet that it would be best if he went into the vets to get a gut stimulant injection, a vitamin B12 (I think) injection and syringe fed every couple of hours.

I'll pick him up after work and hopefully he'll be feeling much better.

Poor wee soul :(

Nibbler is back home and is feeling a bit better. He's eating much more and his poops are getting back to normal now. What a relief!

Well Nibbler is doing well, he's eating plenty and his poops are slowly getting back to normal.

However, I've just had him out to give him his medicine and I've noticed that all along where he was opened up is swollen. I've had a gentle feel and it's not completely hard but it's not super squidgy either. It doesn't seem any hotter than the rest of his tummy and he's on Septrin at the moment anyways, so don't think it's infected.

What could it be?

Just had to happen on a Saturday night, when the vet isn't open again until Monday now! :(

I'm still awaiting the biopsy results for Nibbler, however, I really thought he was turning a corner.... alas, not to be.

He's bleeding a lot again, and that's whilst on Septrin and Metacam. He's also, lost roughly 50g in about 24 hours. He's eating, pooing and peeing still... so I'm waiting until tomorrow morning to phone the vet. Normally in light of him losing so much weight, I would be rushing him to the emergency vets but I genuinely feel that there isn't anything they'll be able to do for him tonight and they don't know his full history, therefore, we are better off waiting until tomorrow to speak to the normal vet.

I think the time has maybe come to let him go. I genuinely think he is now suffering and it's not fair on him. I'm going to see what the vet says before making any definite decisions though. 8...8...8...

i am sorry too honey, you will know if its the right decision, and hopefully if a good vet they will advise you.

Sending much love to you and Nibbler, you are in our thoughts at the moment x

Well, finally got the lab results back. He has chronic interstital (sp?) cystitis. So the same as Jo's Patrick I believe.

He's going in for a steroid injection tomorrow evening so I can't give him any metacam tonight or tomorrow morning.

It's really going to be a case of trial and error to see what helps. I'm trying to remain positive, but if it comes to the stage where he's really suffering and we can't help him, then I'm going to have to do the kindest thing.

It breaks my heart to know that he's going to be stuck with this illness for the rest of his life. :(8...
