Hey

Baron is about 3 years old. He always seemed to be in pristine condition. He drank a lot, watched how much food he consumed unlike my other guinea pig. But lately he slimmed down from not eating, and he doesnt seem to want to pee/poop. Any ideas what might be causing this? The fact that he wont drink is bad, I dont know what to do.

He needs to see a vet asap and in the meantime you need to be feeding him and giving him water ASAP.

If you don't have critical care then add luke warm water to some of his pellets and mash them up enough to feed through a syringe and also syringe him water.

It's really important that you do this now and get him to a vet as soon as you can.

Let us know what happens.

have you checked to see if he has a blockage and is unable to poop.you need to try and get some food into him mushed up pellets or baby food if he cant chew.but like lisa said get him to the vets asap

Yes I'd forgotten about the babyfood, you can syringe feed him vegetable baby food (in jars) too.

Welcome to the forum, Nick.

How long has Baron not been eating for? A pig who is not eating and drinking will stop producing faeces and urine, the system effectively begins to shut down; by the time it gets to that stage it is serious and the pig requires urgent attention. Subcutaneous fluids and syringe-feeds are essential, a motility drug may help, and a skilled vet needs to determine if the teeth have overgrown as a result of not eating.

The causes of his refusal to eat are greatly varied - it can be anything from dental or oral problems, to bloat or any condition which causes pain.

Good luck, do keep us updated.

How much weight has he lost?
Is it a case of he cannot eat or he does not want to eat? The latter case is more pessimistic in outlook.
The cause of his problem could be anything from a dental problem to a bladder stone.

Thanks everyone. I took him to a vet and decided it was for the best to put him down. He was about that age, and ever since Scorsese died he hasn't been quite the same. Anyways, its my b day and I had to put him down. Lets just say I cried way too much but I deff didnt want him to suffer. He was an amazing Guinea Pig.

I'm so sorry Nick, how sad for you. Big hugs.

Rest well, dear Baron. xx
