Can any of you tell me if Permethrin is safe for use on guinea pigs? I am sure that at least 3 of our 5 guinea pigs have mites... we have an insecticiadal spray but don't want to use it until we're sure it won't harm them. tia

hi and welcome
please put your location in your profile so the mods can help you with vet advice if needed.

i have 4 pigs and they keep me on my toes that's for sure.
what breed are your pigs and what's their names?
what colours are they?
the reason why i'm asking is because i'm blind so cant see picks if you post them at any point.

Hi

Permethrin is not safe, nor is any insectidal spray - some of the latter may contain substances that are harmful or even lethal for guinea pigs.

Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis and use a good quality ivermectin brand. Be aware that shop products are too low dosed to deal with an acute outbreak and that treating on spec can make things worse rather than better, resulting in much more suffering for the piggies and higher cost for you if you treat wrongly or undertreat.

I have moved your thread to our specially monitored health/illness section for more qualified answers from experienced members.

Since we have members and enquiries from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can tailor any advice and recommendations to what is available and relevant for you straight away. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thank you!

Hi Maddy our guinea pig colours vary, they are all long haired, Olly is a female and she is totally white with a circle of ginger around one eye, Mo is a male and he is white and blonde, Larry is a male and is black, blonde and white, Harley is a male and he is black, blonde and white, Curly is a female and her fur is curly (hence the name) and she is black and white.
Olly and Harley are the parents and Curly, Larry and Mo are their children, born on good friday 2 years ago at 2:00am

Thank you.... I can't begin to understand why they are selling it in a pet shop then.

Pet shops are legally not allowed to sell medication. Their stuff is only geared for prevention.

That said, healthy, well kept guinea pigs with a fully working immune system do not need preventative treatment that can contribute to develop resistance to ivermectin in those mange mite eggs that dormant in the skin as the immune system keeps those eggs nicely under control. It is much better (and overall cheaper) to treat with a full course - for mange mites that is 3-4 rounds - of the appropriate product for the specific skin parasite in an acute case; you always need to treat all piggies in contact. It is also easy to mistake a fungal skin infection for mange mites; they can look very similar in the very early stages, hence why we can never replace a hands-on vet visit.

If you have just bought your guinea pigs, you can reclaim any vet cost from the shop by presenting the vet bill together with the sales receipt.

We have had 2 of our guinea pigs since I was 18, I'm now 21 and they give birth to our other 3 beauties in April 2015

I used it once for woodworm, as far as l know it did the job ! But l definitely wouldent chance it on my is guineapigs

They should never of sold that to your mam. Trouble in that shop you have to know exactly what you want.
If all the staff had to do a questionnaire 95% would fail. Lol
