Hello everyone O0

We bought a guinea pig 5 days ago for my little boys birthday, she is 12 weeks old, ginger and white and long haired.
Never had one b4 but she seems to of settled down well, my dog buster loves her n he keeps licking her through her cage and she doesnt mind at all lol
ive never had a guinea pig b4 so i have afew questions..if u dont mind.......

when we stroke her she makes sqeaking noises , does that mean shes scared?
i brush her everyday but shen she gets tuftys i have to pull a bit n she doesnt like it but i have to get them out dont i? and will she get used to this?
can i feed her fruit n veg?
can a wash her?

i know these might sound so stupid but its just little things i forgot to ask or didnt realise to ask when i bought her.

thanks guys xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx :smitten:

Hello there, welcome:)
Oh i cant wait to see the new piggy :D sounds gorgeous!
Squeaking lowly? I'm sure the piggy is happy :D mine squeak when theyre happy. Or sometimes they want something..it can mean several things. However because they should be handled a lot when you first buy guinea pig's, I'm sure its nothing other than a happy sound:)

If it's a short loud squeal, it means she's found something painful. If it's general 'chatter' she's happy. I normally find that a scared piggy makes no noise what so ever. She if she squeaks on your lap she is she is normally happy. Also look out for purrs, if you stroke her and she does it...this means she's very happy, or they do it to an unfamiliar but non threatening noise.

I've not had much experience with long haired piggys, so all i can say is, yes the knots need to be taken out but be gentle.

You can feed fruit and veg, but do it in small amounts as she is only a baby, and increase it as she gets older.

and I'm not sure what the minimum age is for bathing a guinea, but i think you can bath her!

Welcome to the forum and i hope you enjoy it here :)

and most of all, she needs some company. guinea pigs are very very social animals, and the minimum is two piggies together, else they get very very lonely. As much as you can stroke her, cuddle her, and feed her treats - you dont speak her language. And even if you spend a great 7 hours a day with her playing - it would still mean that for 17 hours of the day, she would sit alone in her cage.

Alot of rescues have other sows, or neutered boars, waiting desperately for new homes. Whereabouts are you from?
