Hello! My guinea pig suddenly got extremely skinny starting last week. She became much skinnier than her younger friend and had dry yellow bits on her nose. She was tired when i changed her cage and when i was done she just stared blankly at the cage wall for awhile until i gave her one of her hidies back(i exchange the hidies depending on the time of day) she quickly moved into it and walked to her food bowl but wouldn't eat and stare. My grandmother came back from her trip a month ago and said my piggie was skinnier and at that time it wasnt very dramatic so i couldnt see it and ignored my grandma. What should i do i dont think my parents will bring me to a vet

Ongoing weight loss, and a discharge from her nose, definitely need a vet check. If ypur parents cannot help you perhaps your grandmother would if she is interested in your guinea pig and agrees about the weight loss? Its a good idea to weigh guinea pigs weekly, and then daily if any weight loss is suspected, but if this has been going on a while and puggy is noticeably thin you need to get her to the vet. Hope she is ok x

Thank you i will definetely do my best to take her to a vet as soon as possible

I absolutely agree - weight loss, refusal to eat and nasal discharge require veterinary treatment.

In the meantime, while waiting for the vet, you need to step in with emergency syringe feeding to keep her going and try and prevent too much weight loss Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Please note that this sounds like an emergency due to the lack of appetite. Piggies who don't eat have their internal organs start to shut down which is fatal. She needs to see a vet asap and please do step in with additional feeding immediately

Hi and welcome

Any major weight loss is very worrying. Please weigh a healthy guinea pig (or any pet you ever have) once weekly; a guinea pig that is not quite right, weekly. This is important for monitoring its food intake. A guinea pig that is not eating properly is an ill guinea pig.

If your guinea pig is very thin and lethargic, then it needs to see a vet urgently. The discharge from the nose could point to a respiratory problem and your guinea pig will likely need some antibiotic.

Please step in with support feeding your guinea pig now to keep it alive until any medication can kick in. You can use mushed up pellets and also offer water.
Please take the time to read the advice in this link here how you prepare and do it, and how you look after your piggy until it is better again with vet care: Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Fingers very firmly crossed!

Thank you all for the advice. The vets near me right now have been closed and I'm hoping to get to the vet tomorrow morning

All the best!

Please step in with support feeding care NOW. The emergency care link contains lots of tips of what you can do with what you have at home or easily available.
Parallel to any medical care, your care at home is as important. A guinea pig whose body is closing down from lack of food can't be healed...

Hello to everyone who has replied,I'm sorry to update after such a long while .
When i started emergency feeding she spit out the food when i fed her by hand .she had a seizure like strained movement and passed away that night.
I'm very sorry for not being a careful owner for not checking on her more carefully before and am very sad she has left. I am thinking of rehoming my piggie's friend to my relative who owns more guinea pigs as I I dont want the other piggie to be lonely as well.
Thank you for all the help at the time.

I am very sorry; her spitting out the food means that she could no longer swallow and process any food as she was already dying. :(

Companionship is good, but please double-check the gender of both piggies beforehand and follow the advice in our illustrated bonding guide to make sure that your piggy is safe.

Your relative may find the information in this guide collection useful as a resource; the links in this thread are all part of it. The advantage we have is that we can constantly update and extend our information, unlike a book that would be rather quickly outdated.
It also contains information on guinea pig behaviour, interaction between them and with humans; care and health monitoring advice, how to spot illness and problems early on and what to do in an emergency etc.

Her friend is also a female

She absolutely is, free from any pain and suffering and playing with lots of the forum piggies who have made their way there over the year. She knows how much you loved her

So very sorry for your loss.
Guinea pigs can become ill very quickly and hide illness well.
You asked for help as soon as you saw something wrong - that is the sign of a good owner.
Please don’t beat yourself up.
Be kind and gentle with yourself as you grieve
