Hi I'm desperate for advice. Rang vets and they are seeing bramble at 5 pm.

Just wish I knew what it was and how to help him. For now I'm just keeping him on the metacam, gently removing any hay that is getting stuck there

Hey everyone. A quick update. Vet does think it could be a possible prolapse but because it keeps going back in again the day after it all pops out she wants to keep him on metacam and is now introducing 0.9 of baytril and he's to go back in few days. She still waiting for the hospital special vets by us to return email but if needs be she will book us in with them. She examined his brother who is very similar down there in frilly skin but no swelling like bramble has inside. The swelling has reduced but he obviously is uncomfortable so as he is eating, weeing, drinking as normal she wants to try to baytrill then possible scan I think.

Is 0.9 of baytril a normal amount? Bit concerned! It looks lots ?!

0.9mls baytril does sound quite a high dose, about twice as much as is routinely prescribed- what is the concentration given on the prescription label? If it is a 2.5% baytril solution then the usual recommended dose according to the NOAH compendium is 0.4mls per day per kilo of bodyweight. Though we have been prescribed a higher dose (0.4mls for a 650g piggy) for an open wound after surgery.
I can see how the vet would want to make absolutely sure that the prolapse doesnt become infected, which could be fatal, but you might want to phone the vet and double check the dose, unless they have diluted the baytril to less than 2.5% or your piggy is particularly big x

He weighs 1200 g

Ok he's quite a big boy, did you check it is 2.5% baytril not watered down already? I would still double check with the vet just to be sure, some vets (including mine) suggest diluting baytril at home with fruit juice as it tastes awful so they may have meant half fill the syringe then go to 0.9ml with water or juice? Or they may have diluted it with something already. Or of course they may mean give 0.9mls as originally mentioned, I wouldnt want to second guess a vet and under dosing with antibiotics is a very bad idea indeed, you might just mention that the dose seems a bit high but if they confirm that's what they meant I would trust the vet x

Ok thanks. I'll ring them in the morning if they are open.

I just went to the vets with bramble. They double checked and worked out again the dosage. 0.9 is the top of the range allowed to be given apparently. They want him on a high dose to see if an infection. I'm so worried about him. Poor thing is walking and it's all dragging on the floor of bedding as it's all come out again so the vets want me to Luke warm bath him and place him on special bedding until the special vet can see him. He doesn't appear to be in pain this morning so metacam must be helping. He ate loads this morning and was singing away as I was taking too long according to him lol! But just wish his "bits" were back in.:-(

Poor chap, and poor you- it must be awful watching him drag his prolapsed bits around the cage :( at least you've checked the antibiotic dose and got some pain relief for him, paws crossed the specialist vet can help him x

I have been prescribed a similar Baytril dose, before for my piggie but for different reasons. They obviously want to give it a good go at getting rid of any possible infection. Poor little thing, at least he seems to be pain free! Good luck and let us know how he gets on.

Really hope you and the vets can find out what’s going on and help poor Bramble to get more comfortable. My past piggy Sheepy had ‘cauliflower willy’ and I was constantly picking hay out of his bits and bobs but I’ve never seen anything like that. Thinking of you both xx

I feel so useless. I'm doing all I can and it doesn't seem enough

You are doing everything you can until you see the specialist vet, it must be very difficult to see your boy like this but if he's getting his medicine and you are keeping him on soft bedding and keeping him clean that's the best you can do x

Given Luke warm shallow bath again today just to keep it clean. It's still fully out. Longest time it has been now:-( seems to be alot of urine on cage floor but could be his brother too. They always wee loads and I've always had that checked too. Can you suggest any other bedding? Don't like the idea of him dragging bits round wet floor so I'm changing bedding hourly

I am so sorry you and your boy are going through this. I would suggest vetbed would be the best bedding for you. A thick layer of newspaper underneath will soak up the wet, vetbed locks the wee underneath.

Sorry if I’ve missed it elsewhere in the thread, but what type of bedding is he on?
A fabric bedding would be best - fleece or vetbed

Well initially was on shavings and paper but removed that immediately when issue started. Then placed towels in. Then changed it to fleeces. Now put in on advice from a guinea rescue they came from paper puppy pads from local shop but I'm not sure they are best for him.
