keepingmesane

we were got our GP's and Rabbit from a free to good home ad last week, they were both in plastic cages and kept in a shed (as far as we could tell)

We will be starting the build of the new deluxe home for our rabbit (will be two soon once he is 'done') and for the guineas (seperate from the rabbits but in the same area).
what would your dream home be if you could build it for your Guinea pigs? what toys/ activites/ hidy holes etc would you include?

also want to have a stock of 'essentials' for Fifa and Dora, should they need anything. what would you recommend having in with regards to basic first aid etc. i know a vet is always first and foremost, but I'm sure it would be helpful to have things at hand should i need them

thanks xx

hi, welcome to the forum.

are you keeping the pigs indoors or outdoors?

I'll start you off with a few things we've found helpful, and i'm sure other people will add to the list.

peter gurney's book "a practical guide to caring for your guinea pig"
ivomectin for the mites
get them onto all in one food asap (eg burgess supa excel)
you get some great supplies from this website: http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/
heres a great food link from this forum: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42
don't skimp on the quality of the nail clippers

AVOID CHEAP PET SHAMPOO (contains sodium laurel sulphate, aggrevates pigs skin)

that will get you going for starters if i think of anything else i'll post again... but really i've found the knowledge on this forum to be one of the most extensive resources on the internet.

Get them on to a pellet food if you can, but obviously rabbit food for the rabbit and pig food for the pigs :) Pellets may look more boring but it means they can't seletively feed! I use a mix food, by Wagg, which I think is one of the better ones! (better than gerty guinea anyway!)

I always keep cotton wool *pads* (not balls as the fibres can come off when cleaning wounds etc)
q tips/cotton wool buds,
olive oil,
salt,
savolon,
'supreme' science recovery or 'oxbow' critical care,
avipro or bio lapis (pre biotics for when using anti biotics)
lice and easy shampoo

Congratulations on your new additions :) I'm glad you've seperated the rabbit from the piggies and you're going to get the bunny neutered :)

My piggies love paper bags (stuffed with hay makes them even more fun!), toilet roll tubes stuffed with hay, piles of hay to play in.... They like areas to hide too - so things like cardboard boxes are ideal. Also, those little plastic steps which you can usually find for about £1 are ideal as hidey places - they have a roof and bits of walls but still lots of open bits for them to look out of which helps with scared piggies. They love those cardboard "chubes" and also plastic tubes too. You can often get the rolls from carpets from carpet shops, which, when cut into shorter lengths make ideal cardboard tubes. :) Mine also like their hammock and I'm hoping to get more for them. If you go to http://www.hammockyhammocks.co.uk/ they have fantastic beds, hammocks etc which piggies seem to love! (just make sure you get the right size because they have chinchilla, rat, etc products on there too).

Shampoo is a good thing to have - if you're going to get some then Gorgeous Guinea's is the best one you will find and it's completely safe. You also need things like nail clippers (and nail files are helpful otherwise they're left sharp!), combs, brushes etc (especially if they're long haired). I also like to have a few syringes lying around just incase they stop eating or drinking and become ill (and they're also helpful for meds).
