Hi I'm New And I Need Some Help

Hi all,

I have now owned two Guinea pigs for about 8 months now, 2 female pigs one called Cherry and the other called Abbey now Cherry has always been full of beans and full of energy and likes nothing better than to have a good explore and a good runaround. Abbey on the other hand seems to be quiet still which I was told she had been when I brought her but she now seems to be putting on abit of weight and I don't know what to do, they get to go out in the garden most days and if not they handled and looked after inside but Abbey just wants to sit there. We give them XL Guinea Pig feed and some veg every day and I wait til they finish what I've put in until I put some more in.

Any tips on how I can encourage Abbey to exercise?

Are they females for sure? Sorry these days people are always sexing them wrong.

I have some girlies that don't exercise much! ;)
 
I got them from the local RSPCA and they were diveded into boys and girls. So pretty sure there both girls.
 
Yer, tbh Squeak doesnt actually run round much - she prefer's just sitting eating her way out of things like a BIG pile of grass or lots of hay - wouldnt say she was active at all lol :D
 
plump might be a understatement for Abbey. how do you exercise your Guniea Pigs?

I dont think theres any real way of 'making' your guineapig run around and exercise? I have quite a big run and Squeak just walks a bit to the next patch of grass - sometimes she has odd 'spurts' of running around, but that doesnt last long and she's sitting back down again...

I have quite a large hutch so I make sure her food is on the complete other side of where she sleeps so she has a little walk to that and every chance I get when the weathers nice I pop her out in the garden for a few hours - put tunnels in her run to try and encourage her to run through them, but she kinda does what she wants hehe :) - but thats all I think you can do really, unless anyone else has any ideas? :)
 
How much does Abbey actually weigh? do you have some scales to weigh her on? Kitchen scales are fine :)
 
Unfortunately I don't have any weighing scales, its just she is like twice the size of Cherry.

What would you say a healthy Guniea Pig should weigh?

totally agree as when they are ill they have that extra tro see them through illness my vet even told me this not fat but plump is fine by me , have you tried hiding food/veggies in places that make them search for it in cardboard tubes ets
 
When I had my 3 piggies, only one of them would really exercise the most. The other 2 didn't. However, one day I took them outside and we had some rolls of plastic pipe and I put them down and they ran like crazy through it playing for a long time. Then they would pop out one end and run back through it. It was funny to watch. Some do and some just don't as much as others. O0
 
Hi,welcome to the forum.

Some of my piggies are more active than others. Some just want to sit there and watch the world going by. (A bit like people I guess, some are just lazier! ;D)

I have a wooden hut in the run and hutch and put hay on top of it which makes them stretch up tall to get to it, they sometimes get carried away and jump on top of it. In the run they have several tubes/arches/tunnels/pots to get in and out of and this keeps some of them entertained. Hope this helps a bit. I wouldn't worry too much as long as your piggie's healthy.
 
Agree, some guineas are lazier and bigger/chunkier, whatever you want to call it, where as others can be quite outgoing and fairly slim. I think your best bet is what Michellemuffin said and make some toys that have treats in them, so she has to work for her food (throw the treats away after she is done playing with them or at the end of the day). A sow should weigh between 700 and 900 grams, but quite a few sows have be known to reach around 1500 (some should weigh this depending on their build), but if your guinea is looking to big try and cut back on treats or make her really work for them. O0

Don't worry about her weight, you're better off having a piggie with a little extra weight, she'll be fine O0
