Hi! We've just noticed a weird lumpy bit with little dark spots image.webp next to one of our guinea pigs noses. We have an appt with a practice nurse at a local vet Friday (to show us how to cut their claws) so I can ask her then if we need to see the vet but I wondered if there is anything we can do before then? He is about 3 months old and we've had him a few weeks. I've tried to take a picture. Thanks in advance!

It is difficult to tell but my first thought is fungal, possibly Ringworm as it is a common spot for it. However there is a chance it could be boar glue but with the spots too I am more inclined to think fungal. If it is Ringworm he will need to see the vet. Here is our Ringworm guide

Thank you, should it be ok to wait until we are in anyway on Friday? (I don't think I can get there before then anyway! ) Is there anything I should put on it in the mean time?

Friday is ok, as it's only a day away really. In the meantime you will need to be very careful with hygiene. Does he have a friend? I would check him over if so to see if there is anything similar.

If the vet suspects Ringworm they will most likely try to culture a sample. The most effective treatment is the systemic medication Itrafungol and dips in a product called Imaverol. I buy the Imaverol here (it is unbranded and means you don't need a prescription)

The Itrafungol will need a prescription from the vets.

Thank you! Yes he has a friend. I can't see anything on him but I'll get them both checked Friday when we are there. We've only had them a few weeks but I've been keeping cages very clean (they are very spoiled, they have huge cages/areas in multiple rooms of the house and a run outside too!) I use fleece and also carefresh in some areas in shallow litter type boxes. I clean it and change it all regularly. :(

If it is Ringworm I would limit them to just the one area while it is being treated and then they can go back in the other areas once they have the all clear.

Yes I thought so too! Wouldn't allow my daughter to take them upstairs tonight she had to leave them down here and she's distraught. I also told her to hold off cuddles etc for now until we find out what it is! Don't want the kids getting ringworm if it's that! :( Is it something they could have brought with them when we got them? Or could it be from their hay etc? Guess it's hard to know huh. :(

It is possible they arrived with it, were they from Pets at Home by any chance?

I am tagging @My3cuteBoys as she has recently been through Ringworm and has young children too.

Hi @awallapiggie, I brought my three little fellas not knowing they were badly effected with ringworm if I can be of any support to you please just ask I will do my best to help and support you with your questions. When you see the nurse about their nails explain they may have a fungal infection and ask if a vet can see them. I would tell them you want to know for sure what it is as you don't want your daughter catching it (or any other pets) the vet should take hair plucks from each of your piggies the results take appox 7-10 days to come back. Both my daughters and I caught ringworm from our piggies in the week before we knew they were ill, it's a horrid thing to catch as it is extremely itchy. I wouldn't let your daughter touch them until you know what this is for sure, lots of hand washing and change your top if you have handled them, ringworm lives in the hair follicle and is very easily spread.
Kell.
