lwcreations

Hi, my name is Lisa and I live in Essex. On Saturday I was ambushed by my 5 year old son and we now have 2 guinea pigs. We got them from Pets at Home I don't know if that is good or not really, but my son fell in love. He has named them Jay and Jennifer they are cute but are still a little bit timid of us. I have never owned guinea pigs before and haven't a clue about them. We also have 2 cats, 2 dogs and 5 fish. The guinea pigs are being kept indoors in my son's bedroom away from the other animals.

How long does it normally take for them to become used to being handled? They are fine once you have them it is just catching them that seems to be the battle at the moment. We didn't handle them straight away other than to transfer them to their cage but we have been talking to them and letting them know we are around. I got them out and handled them today but I don't know if I have given them long enough to get used to us.

I look forward to chatting to people and hopefully getting to know more about guinea pigs.

Lisa

Hi and welcome!
From the names i asume you have a boy and a girl you need to seperate them if they arent already or youll have mini pigs soon as guineas can breed from 3 weeks of age onwards! They take a while to become used to you mine took around seven months and the younger ones would still rather be running around than being handled! The older ones sit on my 3 year olds lap for cuddles the older ones are around 11 months old! Handle them for as long as they seem happy and then pop them back!

Hi and welcome to the forum :) I am Claire and I live in Rochdale. We have 2 female guinea pigs called Connie and Eliza. A syrian hamster called Grace, 2 gerbils called Kym and Aggie, a cat called Harrison and 2 goldfish called Ralph and Kane. As Charlie has already mentioned, you need to separate them asap if they are male and female and live in the same cage. My Connie used to be a real demon when it came to catching her but with a lot of gentleness and care, she became easier to handle and loves to have cuddles. All pigs have different personalities. Connie doesn't like to be caught but loves to be cuddled. Eliza doesn't mind being caught but will fidget after about 15 minutes of being cuddled. I look forward to chatting with you more xx

They are both girls I probably spelt the name wrong should have had an e on the end. He named them after 2 girls in his class, in fact they were named even before we had purchased them.

I am not sure how old they are but the lady said they had not long left mum. Thanks for the handling advice I am going with little and often if that makes sense.

Hi,
Just be warned Guinea Pigs can be addictive, within a year I have had 5, currently have 4, and well, am emergency/overflow foster carer for guinea pigs as well (for Sokel and Hels)

My four pigs are all boars (male), Blaze who is eldest at 14 months, and his brother Spice died at 10 months, I also have 7 months old Cinder and Flame and 7 week old Spark.

oops didn't mean to thank you...

I didn't really have the room for more than two but well...
Also double check that they are both female. Can do this by gently pressing above the bits, you can easily tell if they are both female. Not to worry you but GP's can be sold missexed easily.
