Hi there, my guinea pig Corvo has been diagnosed with a URI and prescribed Baytril as a result. But I saw the amount prescribed and thought it looked really high, and from my searches in forums it seems to be excessive? This vet also made me uneasy saying that probiotics aren't necessary for guinea pigs on Baytril, so I'm questioning her judgement?

He's been prescribed Baytril 2.5% oral solution
"Give 1.5mls TWICE daily for SEVEN days"
He weighs 1.4 kg and is 2 years old.

I just want to make sure I'm not being hyperparanoid.

Hi!

No, you are not paranoid, the comma is in the wrong place. while dosages for URI are generally much lower than for urinary tract problems, but for your piggies' weight it is rather low of it was just 0.15 ml twice daily - that is about as little as your vet can get away with.

The efficiency of probiotics in in fact scientifically not proven and is disputed. However as the use is not harmful and it may help, it is widely used. Please note that probiotics are a food supplement and not a medication in the first place.

In most cases, baytril is actually tolerated, which is why it is still used. If Corvo is experiencing loss of appetite due to the baytril and not the URI, try making 'poo soup' instead. If you make it with poos that have just dropped from a healthy companion's bum by soaking the poos in a little water and then syringing the water while the microbes and gut bacteria are still alive, it is noticeably more effective than probiotics and can really make a difference even it is a bit gross. But it also mimics natural behaviour.

Here is an oversight on available products: Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

I am linking in @Jaycey into your thread; she can tell you which dosage you should best aim for.
Can you please tell us whether you are dealing with a mild or strong URI?

Thank you for your quick insight! I'll keep the poo soup in mind if his appetite falters.
It's a mild to moderate URI, not severe, fortunately according to the vet we caught it early and aside from crackly lungs, everything else (heart, sinuses, etc.) is alright at the moment.

0.2-0.3 ml are perfectly safe to give each time for URI at your piggy's weight, but please wait and see what Jaycey says; she may recommend a slightly higher dosage.

@sakinrolo 1.5ml twice a day is quite a hefty dose. Have you been given the bottle of Baytril or has it been poured into another bottle? I've had Baytril given before at a high dose and when I queried it the vet had diluted it in water so the pig wouldn't react as badly to the taste. I got them to swap it for non diluted as it was easier to get a small amount into the pig rather than amount that's more than 1 syringe full.

I've not used Baytril for a while but 0.4ml twice a day seemed to be a common dose given to me. Your boy may be able to have a bigger dose as he's a big boy, or sometimes it's given in a bigger dose for a couple of days to kick start it.

I'd definitely query it with your vet though.

I'd always use probiotics with Baytril. It'll do no harm if your pig doesn't have any issues, and it will be really helpful if he does have issues.

Thank you for your answers, I called the vet and it indeed was a misplaced decimal point, so it was meant to be 0.15ml twice a day. However, due to his weight, they recommended that I increase the dosage to 0.3ml twice daily instead. Here's to hoping that he recovers quickly!

Thank you again :)
