Hi guys, my four year old boar seems to have a problem. Sorry to be a little direct, but his "bits" seems to be protruding. I don't see a willy (again, sorry!), but it all looks like it's sticking out and doesn't normally. He doesn't seem umcomfortable, but it doesn't half look it! Any advice gratefully received!

*bump* Should I just take a q-tip and have a little look and clean? Am wondering whether it all just needs a little push back in or should I just go to vet?

Extrude the penis fully and check for caked on dry semen or wax discharge. This can be cleaned off with a cotton make up remover pad or a piece of gauze soaked in warm water. There may even be some hay or other debris wrapped round the penis.

If he was mine I would put him in a bit of warm water and gently clean round his bits with just plain water in case there is anything trapped up there. I have had a guinea pig in the past that this happened too and this was what I did.:)

Sometimes this happens when the penis has been out ;) then gets things stuck to it, i.e. dried semen or woodshavings so it can't go fully back in.

Press him gently just above the penis so that it protudes fully. Have a look at the tip and if it looks sticky and dirty give it a quick wash while out.

Yes, boars eh? What are they like?! :))

PS. Don't forget to give it a wipe dry!

I've tried to clean it but I think it's scabby as it won't clean off :-( so I daren't try and push it back in yet

Should I keep putting a bit of vaseline to soften it up and help it heal and go away?

You must get the penis clean so it can retract. As it is,it could very easily get infected or damaged.
Try some warm olive oil,let it soak in for a few minutes then try to remove the debris with a cotton pad.Do not use cotton wool as this will just stick. If the penis looks sore after you have cleaned it apply some Calendula cream. If you do not have this,Kamilosan or Aloe vera gel will be o..k.

Thanks Mary. It looks like it's not the penis sticking out but the surrounding fleshy bit? I'm going to check further this evening when I get home. I'm worried that the scabby bits are the result of damage because it's dragged on the floor. I'll try what you suggest. It does look a little sore :-(
