Hole In Piggies Head

Ok so cultures are back and the bug is resistant to basically everything except penicillin base and Zithromax? Which the vet said is similar and NOT safe for piggies. I know they have been treated before and the vet recommends giving it with a probiotic and or using her piggy pals poo To syringe back the good bacteria. Just a quick question for those who have done that before. How do I do it. What are the right poo'd and how do I identify them? And what do I do to make the poo soup? Thanks guys x

Yes, as @sport_billy says, Zithromax is okay for piggies. My Zebedee has had it 4 times since he got a URI that Baytril and Septrin couldn't clear just after he came to us 2 years ago. Whereas with Baytril he continues to lose appetite and weight, with Zithromax his weight at least stabilises and starts to regain once he starts getting better.

As Zithromax isn't licensed for piggies, your vet may well ask you to sign a disclaimer before prescribing it.

I hope Sweetie gets better soon - the abscess sounds really unpleasant for her - and you too!

I'll sign anything if it has the potential to increase her quality of life and clear this infection. I will speak to the vet in the morning about Simon Maddox. Really hoping this clears it for her. Good to know other piggies have successfully had Zithromax. He did say other piggies he has treated have had it before but he wanted to be sure that none of the licensed antibiotics would be effective before he gave her one which could potentially really upset her gut. Thanks for all the help guys xx

Zithromax is off licence that's why some vets are reluctant to use it. However it really is the only thing that may help in your piggy's case so you may have to insist on it, or get a second opinion from an Exotic vet or one more experienced in Exotic pets like piggies.

On the whole she's actually doing much better She scratched all her stitches off she the vet just cleaned it up and took them out and left it as an open wound and I've been cleaning it so while it looks awful this big sore on the top of her head it's clean and I think she feels more comfortable. The azithromycin has kicked in now and her breathing is substantially better. She's got fight back in her again. She's fighting me for syringe feeding and she nearly got the vet a cracker today. She has had enough of being there hahaha according to Sweetie vets and piggies don't go together . So plan now is for her to be on the azithromycin for at least 3 to 4 weeks and hope that that eradicates the long standing infection she has had. I'm feeling hopeful for her although I'm away to Spain on Sunday for a week so my mum will be taking on pig nurse duties so I'm a bit anxious about that. Hopefully it will be ok though. Thank you for asking
