Hole On Pig's Head

I've been dealing with this since May, the vet is SO useless and no help. I live in AK so it's hard to find a vet close to me. But my guinea pig has this weird abscess/ hole on top of her head and I found ANOTHER one tonight, I'm so frustrated right now. I'm getting no answers, I'm at my wits end, I need some help. It oozes, smells horrible and just fills up, any leads are helpful15678331715948029292271885113611.jpg

Hi! Is your piggy living alone or has it got a companion?

If there is a companion, has your vet considered abscessed bite wounds? Is your guinea pig on antibiotics as abscesses are a serious matter in guinea pigs? Where is the other spot?
 
Oh no! If it smells foul, it definitely seems like an abscess. Has she been given any antibiotics? A lot of vets only want to give guinea pigs Baytril, as it's considered the safest antibiotic for them, but others are able to be used and will be more effective on abscesses. A lot of forum members have had good luck with Zithromax (azithromycin.) I've had good abscess response with chloramphenicol. It's also important to keep the abscess as clean as possible... you can use a small syringe to rinse the wound with sterile saline (I used to use the stuff they sell for contact lenses- not cleaning solution, just sterile saline.) We used a dental syringe to irrigate the wound as best we could while it was healing. Abscesses need to heal from the inside out so regular cleaning along with a good antibiotic may be helpful. In addition, depending on the location it is sometimes possible to remove the entire abscess capsule and stitch the area closed, though you'll need a good vet for that and there may not be much skin to work with on top of her head. Where is the second abscess located?

Single piggy, she's on antibiotics now and it's next to this one
 
Last one I saw like this (not that long ago) It was an abscess. And sadly it tracked down into the ear. As already suggested antibiotics and also copious flushing and cleaning with hibiscrub or F10.

I'm so sorry for your loss. :( I lost a piggie who had a jaw abscess that infected the bone and caused sepsis in spite of antibiotics and everything we tried to do for her. It sucks. ((HUGS)) and thinking of you.

I am ever so sorry! It sounds like the abscess has got into a vital organ. :(
You have done the right thing by having your girl vet checked promptly. Unfortunately, baytril is often not strong enough to cut through an abscess.
