We are currently planning for our holidays next year and are wondering what to do with the piggies. My sister lives just over an hour away and has volunteered to look after them for short periods of time. But, 10 days to two weeks would probably be too much for her.

What do you guys do when you go away?

Mine board at my local guinea pig rescue. It's only 2.50 per guinea pig per day but you can add on shampoo/bath, haircut and blowdry, massage etc. Also comes with free health check, deworming, nail clipping etc. Only the best lol, they have a better holiday than me. Plus I get to give money to a good cause.

The best thing to do would be to do a Google search for "your town + rescue + boarding" - Some rescues may be in your area but may not take guineas in for boarding.

We are quite lucky in that OH's mother has experience with piggies so whilst we've never been away since we've had them (and in my case, I haven't had a holiday since 2002!) if we do go away next year or in the future we will take them the short journey to hers. I will be worrying about them all the time though!

Kenzo that rescue/boarding home sounds wonderful! I will consider one in the future if there is one near us and MIL can't look after ours.

Mine go to guinea pig boarding with Teejay http://www.vipiggies.co.uk/. I'm really pleased because they are happy going there and come home chilled out, so it's one less thing for me to worry about. I did try leaving them with my sister at one point, but she's not a guinea person, it was that one hot week in the year, and despite me giving her instructions, I was told that I was overreacting and they were fine. When I got back, they clearly were not happy, in a very hot room, and were close to being dehydrated. I couldn't get them out of there fast enough!

Just make sure whoever you leave them with, in boarding or with friends/family is very piggy savvy and will get them to the vet asap if needed, then you know you can relax & enjoy your holiday.
