Our guinea pig cage is a large, l-shaped mixture of c&c and Perspex, which sits on top of cupboards. Suffice to say, it wouldn’t be easy to move! I’ve been thinking about getting a cage that we could take to someone else’s house, to look after them if we ever go away (we have plenty of volunteers!)
The Ferplast 160 is on offer at the moment on Zooplus. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how small it folds down when in storage? We could keep it in the garage when not in use, but the less space it takes up the better! It looks like the sides might come apart so you could keep them in the base? Thank you!
 
I use C&C grids and a sheet of plastic (plastic table cloth would do) as the base to cover the floor. The grids concertina up into a small size you can pack in a carrier bag. I join the grids with cable ties all except the last 2 so you can fold them up and fix the last 2 with bull dog clips or clothes pegs when in use. I use the same method to make pens for the shed if I have to move the piggies out of the house when we are decorating.
 
I have the ferplast 160 as a spare cage but I also use cable tied c&c grids and a plastic sheet as a spare cage.

the ferplast when the wire sides are taken off and folded flat will then fold down to the height of the base - so for storage purposes, you need a space 160cm long by 60cm wide by 16cm high. It will need to be stored flat (not laid on its side) to stop the plastic base from warping. However, the plastic sides so come off the plastic base as well then it’ll be less than 16cm high but it took me (with the help of my mum) a little time to get it built it and because it was a bit fiddly getting the plastic sides on to the baas, I do not want to ever have to take them off again! I just remove the wire sides and top and lay it into the plastic base.

I really like the ferplast 160 as a spare cage but I much prefer my c&c arrangement. Just as @piggieminder has said, I just concertina them up as all but the end two grids are cable tied together. They slip down the side of their normal hufch and I just have a sheet of plastic which I got for £1 per metre from a garden centre which I throw down on the carpet first, then pop the cage over, newspaper/puppy pads, hay and temporary cage is done!

We have the 160 cm Ferplast Plaza and it’s a great cage, we also have a 140 Plaza too.At the moment we only have the two girls as recently lost Ted but we have joined them to make an L shape giving 300 cm space.

atm we are using the 40 cm extension and main 120 cm and another 40 cm extension to create a 200 cm cage, it’s great for he girls!
 
Oh! You’re all geniuses! I have 16 spare c&c grids that are cable tied together for an indoor run. I’ve also got some waterproof fleece lining for the bottom (like a puppy pad, but it’s all one piece). I’d just need a sheet of plastic for extra protection I guess. Thank you so much, it never crossed my mind that we could just use those 😂

I was taking my own C&C cage apart and transporting it all in the car each time but it was a right palaver! Now my friend just gets this set up in his dining room when the piggies are about to arrive. So much easier. I got it delivered to his house too!

A cheap pvc shower curtain works great, I got one for £4 from Asda not long ago

I’ve got two little girls arriving soon and I’m looking at a temporary cage indoor set up and this looks like a good option while I wait for their outdoor hutch and much warmer weather to arrive before I transition them outside. What does your friend place underneath to protect the floor? Thanks!

He has some hardboard and then puts newspapers over the top and then the bedding (hay) over that. I think some people use shower curtains as the waterproof base and then papers or fleece on top.

Thank you for getting back to me! 😊 I thought he may done something along that those lines, so will try those options.

I’m so excited! I had pigs when I was growing up but haven’t been in a position to have any until we moved earlier this year and now have a small garden and lawn suitable. Have been looking into outdoor recommendations on here and think I’ll get a ryedale or chartwell as they both seem worth the investment and last!

honestly also it’s refreshing to find a forum so friendly and willing to discuss all aspects of owning and are open to them being outdoors. I joined a few other places looking for advice and immediately got attacked over planning to have them outdoors. When I previously owned as a child we kept them originally outside in a hutch, then a greenhouse and finally a shed with custom built walk in cages and a heater with very little issues. But I’m totally aware of their sensitivity to the cold, so it’s great to have a place to update my knowledge and get recommmendarions on what to do, when it does come to transitioning them 👍
