Holiday Instructions

I went on a residential course for 5 nights when my 2 legged babies were 3 and 5 - their Daddy had 3 sides of A4, clothes set out for every day and meals in the fridge/ freezer with VERY specific instructions. That was pre- piggy, the list would be double now:D

Thinking about it now, I'd be more worried about my furry babies surviving my absence than the 2 legged ones - they are old enough to get into the fridge now!

I've got a Toby too, but mine only has 2 legs - and he is strong enough to open the fridge door:nod:

I have just had to have serious words with MrS to advise him that the piggies are NOT to have treats every day i.e. readigrass, melon, carrot etc. MrS put his fingers in his ears. I will therefore be weighing them before I go and then as soon as I return so I can see what damage he has done. He really would give them treats every hour of the day if I didn't stop him!

I had to leave my boys for a month at my son's once. So long lists of daily and weekly schedules. Bought enough fleeces and mattress protectors so that no laundry required and the used things could just be put in a bin bag for me to wash on return. Like @lisaali left heaps of pre-made labelled food & hay containers. The worst part was cutting the hay into strands that would fit the containers! For vegies could only provide a week's worth as wouldn't be fresh, so left money and a list of which shops to get what at! Ex, cos lettuce & parsley must be from Mango Mick's at Cannon Hill shopping centre and redoak lettuce must be from any Coles grocery shop (not Woolies, not Aldi). Made sure nails trimmed and Peanut Butter's monthly dentals done before I left. Told the family if they don't come running for their vegies take them straight to vet as something is wrong & call me!

@Lilly - OMG! I could get passed the bit where you were cutting the strands of hay to fit in a container! That is hilarious!

@Treacle - I have put them in boarding before and they have been fine. MrS said he would cope with them - I'm not sure given that sometimes he forgets to feed himself if I am not there!

You sound well prepared, whenever I go away I have 3 sides of A4, and bags of veg labelled, nuggets already measured out too.

Enjoy your holiday!

I know he is more likely to over feed than underfeed so at least a know they won't starve! Saying that - I had a little lie in this morning as slept really badly last night. MrS has given them their veg and topped the hay rack up but then forgot to give their nuggets!

Sounds like Toby and Barney will be just fine. I'm sure they will have MrS running round after them nicely during your absence. And a few helpful notes can never do any harm. I've been known to leave post it notes on the fridge door and on the veggies just to make sure there were no misunderstandings (in case Mr A decided to "wing it" and not read the manual...);)

My son & his family are staying with me until they can move into their new house. It's a holiday Monday here and I had an awful migraine during the night so several pills later I ended up sleeping in. Got up to find son shredding cos lettuce into the boys' vegie bowls. Their 2nd helping he says, they were wheeking so much! That's why I have to apportion sizes.

I think I would prefer them to be over fed for a week than just ignored. I know if that happens it is just because he loves them so much so I can't really get cross with him. Think he will be ok with the breakfast portions but it's all the little treats he will give them through the day that will be a problem as it is all the things that aren't hugely healthy for them - we wouldn't eat chocolate all day so the piggies shouldn't eat melon all day!

Agree with you there! Better to have over-attentive carers than those who ignore.

I'm so worried about leaving my pets when I go on holiday! The last person who cared for them fed one of my rabbits the piggy food! Lucky it wasn't the other way around. Thankfully, she sent me photos every day so I noticed quickly & rectified it straight away. Was a bit awkward though, pointing out in the photo that my bunny was clearly eating excel piggy food! Haha. I leave lots of instructions & bagged up veggies. We have to hire someone now as the neighbours did it for a bit when we had less pets - the woman was a childminder and would actually bring the kids over to see our pets! Sigh. Can't imagine the bunnies were too impressed. I wouldn't dare leave them with the pets we have now! I actually ask sitters not to handle any of them though, it's less worry for me that way. The chinchilla can be jumpy & I don't want him to fall (or escape! Goodbye wires! Ack), the bunnies are grumpy and hate being handled by anyone other than me & the piggies are scared of anyone new, so the stress just isn't worth it! Our hammy is so old now that he's best left alone, but checked on. Ohh, I'm so worried! His cage is broken so his wheel has to go in a specific place, what if they move it! >.< The fish, which you'd think were the easiest to care for, some died the last time the neighbours were here as they fed a month's supply of food in 2 days!! Aw man, now I remember why I never go on holiday!

I'm a petsitter and look after lots of different types of pets when their owners are unable to. All the animals who are in my care, are looked after in the same way as I would my own, and the sanctuary piggies. I would hate to think anyone was worried about leaving their pets with me, although I am more than happy to keep them posted by text, as to how their little furries are. I love the fact that I have so many returning clients, so I get to know the pets I care for really well, and can pick up on any problems immediately.

All the piggy boarding available here is through shelters and I would have no qualms in using them for my boys if I didn't have my family near by or couldn't trust them to look after my boys.

Blimey @MochaMoo I am surprised you ever go away - sounds stressful!

@furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary we have a good piggy boarding place near us that I have used a couple of times and would use again if MrS and I are away together, and in fact I don't give them the same amount of instructions (or any) because I know they know what they are doing. MrS on the other hand.....
