Not sure I've put this in the right section but here goes.

We holiday 10 days a month between April and October in our Caravan, I was wondering if you thought piggies would be okay to come along in a smaller transportable cage (the type like ferplast make) for that long, with a run in the awning or not.

My two lived in a large indoor cage (like the one you suggest I think) for 12 days at my mums whilst we were on holiday.

As long as they are secure, I think they'd probably enjoy a holiday!

Thank you hun, I haven't actually got any piggies at the moment but I'm trying to figure everything out in advance before I do anything.;)

we had a static caravan and the piggies went with us every weekend and on any other hols in the UK.

Ah, forward planning and all that! :))

I actually think this is a really nice idea. That way you won't miss them (and they won't miss you) I guess it depends on how far you go, but saying that my two don't seem at all bothered by a trip in the car (they travel in our cat's carrier) and usually just snuggle down or munch on any veggies we drop in for the trip.

We stay in this country but can go anywhere from Dorset to scotland to norfolk. I'm glad to hear your's travel so well.

There is no guarantee I will be able to get any, it all depends on how things go but I believe in figuring stuff out before hand.

If I was going really far away, I'd worry about stressing them out on the journey. And with my experience of awnings (we used to have a touring caravan) they can get very cold, and if there is a lot of rain, very very wet underneath, even if there is a sheet covering the grass (unless of course it is a gravel pitch) I remember one time we went to Dorset, there were puddles in our awning :))

Not to mention that rats and other nasties would find it VERY easy to get through the fabric and inside your awning, and wont hesitate to do so if they can smell/hear piggies in there.

Our awning used to also get very very cold, it is in fact only a sheet in the middle of a field in the winter months. It can get very noisy, and really only protects from the wind and rain (unless it seeps through the floor).

Are they usually housed indoors, or outdoors?

I haven't got any piggies yet :))

Just trying to figure out any potential set backs if I do manage to combat the problems we have with having piggies.....

As for the awning I wouldn't leave them in it jsut let them have floor time ever day in a run while we were in the awning. They would be kept in their cage in the caravan.

Oh yeah, I did read that part, d'oh!

And ah, in that case, that sounds fine... I thought you meant keeping them out there 24/7!

You're lucky, we would never have found room in our caravan for a piggie cage! They usually went to my nan (and often came back a few pounds heaver!) or to a local boarder we know, who specialises in guinea pigs so we knew they were safe
