Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on cheap home made toys for their piggies, i have been reading and a few have popped up that i am not sure of, but sound like they could be quite fun.

1 was to tear old sheets in to stripes and tie them to a branch or pole of some sort and hang over thier cage so the have a wall of material to run through, and the other was to get a large, smooth stone or rock and place in boiling water for 15 mins to kill bacteria, cool and put in for them to run and jump over/on.

has anyone tried these to or have any other ideas i could try, really strapped for cash at the minute and they are eating through there tunnels, and i have had to take the fleece out for a while so they dont have thier hammock, which they loved lol x

Mine enjoy empty loo rolls stuffed with hay to throw around and eat, if you have baby guineas cut the loo roll lengthways as they can get stuck if they try to go through it. Paperbags are always a hit, stuff with hay or leave empty, cut the handles so they don't get caught up in them. My boys love a sheet of brown paper pegged onto the side of the cage so it makes a kind of tent/tunnel. They love to run under it, sleep under it/on top of it and chew it!

I’d be careful with tearing sheets as these could leave little cotton threads hanging that if the piggies nibbled could get caught in their stomach/gut and cause problems, i’d stick to fleece for that sort of thing as it’s safer and less likely to be nibbles.

My pigs also love toilet roll tubes well basically any cardboard stuffed with hay. Also cardboard boxes with different holes for them to run in and out of and also take a nap in, brown paper bags have the same effect as mentioned by wind1.

Also my piggies love just having treats placed around their cage on top of hideys etc. it isn’t a toy as such but it’s a fun game for them like hide and seek with food!

I use stuffed toilet tubes and boxes with hay too, I also spread treats around the cage for them to forage :)

thanks every one, we are having lots of work done in the house at the moment and want to make sure i give them some nice treats as until its all done they wont be able to have as much floor time as normal due to cables and uncovered floors etc, (council remodernising, its great but a pain in the but and its only the first day today!)
want to make their cage as exciting as possible, for a week , and then switch to something else lol keep they guessing x

imho Best toys is birch logs - don't forget fix them allow pigs eat them as they cant use their legs to hold them :). Free and organic.Go to your local forest and cut them by good sizes. My chinchillas and pigs still eating 2m logs I bring from Berks 2 years ago.

The most simplest toy is the most effective one in my case: crumpled piece of clean white paper. They never get bored with it until it is too teared apart to recognize what it was :) Various hideouts for your guinea pig are also always good options.

i second that ive noticed my pigs have even started to enjoy shredding the newspaper i line their cage with since i am not using fleece this week. i also stuff toilet roll tubes with hay. I also fleece tunnels and things for them too... if your going to shred fabric my guess is that fleece is the safest one to shred as it doesnt fray as much.

now that I am no longer using fleece to line my cages with (its really not for me and switching to using hay as a carpeting mixed with absorbant pellets in toilet areas) I'm going to sew all my spare fleece into tunnels and toys for them and may even sell some if they turn out good enough!

cheap/free toys is always a good idea keep the suggestions coming for me too please haha

Mine do too lol, they are purposly digging through the shavings to get to it lol, so funny to watch, (ordering the fitch bedding on payday as the fleece and me didnt get along lol)

Thanks everyone these are great x

Paper bags are a favourite in our house and handily enough they come with our favourite take away! Just make sure to rip the handles so any portly piggies don't get stuck in them! Ours also enjoy a good cardboard box!
