Hello

I love being in the kitchen and I wondered if there are any home made treats that you can make for guineas ?/

At the moment mine have plenty of fresh veg, hay and nuggets but I fancy treating them to something a bit different. As I have so many pigs the treat sticks that you get would be too expensive to buy so I was hoping someone would have a suggestion :(|)

I'm afraid I don't have a clue about piggy recipes but would love to know, myself, so thanks for asking!

Most of those commercial treats seem to contain ingredients which I'd rather not let piggies have (sugar, colourings etc) so piggy friendly treats sound fab - better for your purse and better for their health. Result! :)

There is someone on here that makes piggy treats, something like: Crush up pellets, add oats, maybe some crushed muesli type food, (tiny bit) of honey, grated (carrot, apple, melon etc)
Can't really remember how they binded it all together though

Then rolled out and baked in the oven in nice cut out shapes.
Sorry to be vague, maybe someone can add on to help.
Sounds worth a try though. Good luck. x

I just picked up on this thread, that sounds like a really good idea and you'll know exactly what your piggies are getting. ;)

I'm no cook but I wonder if the honey would keep it all together as it's very sticky!drool

I think I might give these a go myself, I'll let you know how they turn out :p

I think the honey probably would, along with the moisture from fresh fruit. Just go easy on the honey though I guess, otherwise the 'dental problem' questions will be going up.

If you want to make some lovely home made cookies for your Piggies then I highly recommend Galens Garden Cookie Mixes :)

I used to make my own mixes from a base of crushed pellets, but never needed to add honey or oil to bind the mix, as I found after reconstituting the mix and letting it rest for about half an hour or so, it was good enough to achieve a rolling consistency :) I can't remember the exact recipes as I've been using the GG mixes for so long that making them from scratch seems not much more than a distant memory now (either that or I've officially gone senile!)

I have made a huge batch of piggy and bunny biscuits recently. I got the recipe by googling 'bunny biscuits' and finding this recipe:

http://www.rabbit.org/fun/biscuts.html

I didn't add as much honey as was suggested because I thought the amounts used were huge. My advice would be to let the mixture rest because then it will be easier to roll out. Also roll as thinly as possible as the biscuits don't so much bake as dry out and this can take a very long time (up to 40 mins)
