We have all the material for a 5 x2 C&C cage on its way from Amazon and I am planning to make fleece liners to fit. I have fleece on its way and also a couple of large mattress protectors. The mattress protectors are made of a waterproof layer and a thin terry towelling layer and I was planning to just sew the fleece and protector together. Should I add another absorbant layer? Has anyone on here made their own and if so what did you use? Thank you!

I have made my own liner, I put wadding in between the fleece and I like it to be padded for the piggies and I do feel it helps to draw the moisture away!
I would also make two liners to fill the space as it will be easier to clean off and wash!

Thanks for this, 2 liners is a good idea. Do you have a link to show me what you mean by wadding? I'm never too sure (English isn't my native language)!

I think she linked to it somewhere on this thread.

Our new matching fleece set!

I made liners for mine. The boys had a waterproof mattress protector sandwiched between two pieces of fleece. The girls (eventually) had the protector sewn to the back of the fleece.

I’m not a fan of sewn liners because I have burrowers. Given half a chance they would live out their lives under the fleece in a puddle of pee on the base. Instead I throw in my base layer then a large sheet of fleece that I pull up the sides and pin, pin, pin.

I sewed our own. I used fleece and sewed zorb in the middle(absorbent fabric). A bit expensive, but means I dont have to put puppy pads underneath the whole cage, just under where the houses sit, and favourite hangouts. So hoping despite the initial cost, it will save in the long run. I would definitely recommend sewing it in 2 parts. The biggest one I made is 2x3. Personally I wouldn't want a liner to be anything bigger than 2x3 for fitting in the washing machine, and cleaning. I used any spare bits to make extras for houses and favorite corners, which can be changed more frequently.

I use fleece then sew the mattress protector underneath which has some padding. Then I just throw in a smaller fleece which they can hide under if they want to burrow. Agree, take note on size of the drum in washing machine and also how easy it Will be to dry.

I don’t make liners as they are harder to wash. I use fleece blankets on top of washable bed incontinence pads. I use pads on top and in high use areas which get swapped out every day/other day depending on soiling. They have fleece beds too.

Thank you for the replies. I love the avocado set! My fleece will probably be a little while as I've ordered from empressmills so I might have to have a temporary solution as the correx for our cage was delivered today and our boys probably need more room asap. I am planning to make a correx hay tray for one end of the cage so that would reduce the length of liner needed to 2x4. Our washing machine is quite big as there are 5 of us already. Will definitely be making extra pads for high traffic area as at the moment I am having to change the liner in their Ferplast every other day!

If you are making the base waterproof then you do really need some extra filling in the liner so the pee has somewhere to wick away. I use polyester sheet wadding like rp1993 I would also consider making your fleece into 2 halves or 3 x 2 C&C size as trying to brush hairs and hay off really large liners is very difficult, it’s much easier washing smaller liners too x
My liners aren’t waterproof, I put newspaper underneath (I have lovely neighbours who keep me well supplied)

You will be waiting a while from empress mills, they are very slow at the moment! I recommend Tia Knight for fleece!
I have a 2X4 liner but have ordered/ made smaller ones since then, it’s the holding it up and brushing off the hair and hay, it kills my arms 😂

Thank you for that recommendation! I've managed to cancel my empress mills order and have ordered from Tia Knight instead! Hopefully will be sewing liners this weekend!

Ahh brilliant! I’m sure it will arrive by the weekend!

Updating this thread with pictures. I ended up making 2 sets of 2 liners that combine to fit the base of the cage and 3 sets of pee pads for the 2 hideys. Then last weekend I made a fleece forest for their favourite corner. It's really easy to clean everything. I change the pee pads reguarly and the bottom linings last a week. Thank you for the recommendation on fleece and size of liners, I can see that one big liner would have been a pain to wash. I've still got quite a bit of fleece so planning a third set for the bottom and maybe a cube or two in the Easter holidays.
