Can anyone help please. My guinea pig Honey has been bleeding from her bottom,I noticed it 2 days ago and I rushed her to the vet, They are treating her for a gut infection. She has been eating small ammounts and otherwise seems ok. for the past 24 hours she seems to be having a watery discharge coming out of her bottom and not so much blood, Is this a good sign? does it mean the bleeding is stopping? I have no idea how old she is as I rescued her.
Any advice would be great
Thanks
Heidi

shes on Baytril at the moment, The vet also gave me Recovery food for her.
Shes such a lovely piggy I'm really worried about her.
Thank you x

Are you weighing her daily? Could you get hold of some prebiotics (p@h have some or you can get them from your vets) to bolster the effects of baytril on Honey's guts.

Here are tips for hand feeding, including how much. She needs about 120ml daily to keep her weight, ideally little but often and if possible through the night. Your care can make the difference. Also make sure that she has enough fluid.

I have a piggie who has been bleeding on and off the way you have described since November 2009. I have had various tests done on her ( x-rays to check for stones, urine samples taken and spun down to check for crystals and the pH level tested etc ) So if it were me then I would have a chat with the vet and ask whether an x-ray could be done to check for stones and ask for a sample of her urine to be tested.

If this doesn't show anything up then I found switching to the ratewatchers diet and 0.5ml of the cat metacam per day ( to help with inflammation and any discomfort ) helped in our case and has kept her symptoms at bay. They think with Athena she has a thickened bladder, possibly down to a stubborn infection that never fully cleared up which has caused lasting damaged. There are other possible causes including tumors, pyometra, cystitis, Interstitial Cystitis or it could be a simple infection

As Wiebke has said if she's on baytril then a probiotic will help her guts so it's useful to have. At the end of the day though I'm only posting from personal experience and I'm not an expert so just talk through the options with your vet

Whee would just like to wish Honey all the best xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

If any changes what so ever i'd be back to the vets, go armed with some of the information you've gathered to help :)
