She is hooting every night, and I really don't have time, nor place to take care of a heart pig, what should I do? I don't know who I would give her to that could take care of a heart pig, my mom feels it is unfair to give her away, but I really can't take care of someone with a heart condition.

She has not been diagnosed with it, but the problem is that I am, at the moment, as a school-less 17 year old, unable to reach a vet for such advanced dignosis, I alöways hear how it takes so many x rays and so many utrasounds and what not, I've hear it is hard to diagnose properly. This is why I wanna give her away, I wanna give her to someone who can give her the diagnose she might need.

I don't think it takes lots of x-rays to diagnose, as far as I know, but Helen will know. If your mum feels it's unfair to give her away, would she mind helping out with the vet bills?

Could you please message me with your general location if you do not want to post it openly as you are still a minor. We cannot help you in any way, unless we have an idea where you are.

It's Stockholm I'm in, Sweden.

Has she officially been diagnosed?

Where abouts are you? could you see if a rescue would take her?

What makes you think you can't look after her? mine are on meds twice a day.

Sorry lots happened on the thread before I refreshed the page.

Most of my heart pigs did not have an xray but were given a trial of heart mediation instead. Is there a rescue you could take her to?

Tight money at this moent, the omney will get better, but it will take a longer time than I think she will last, it would take about two months to save up. We dot have any huge rescues, just some very small ones, I only know of two, not sure if they take sick guinea pigs. It is not a URI because non of my other pigs are sick, the first time I heard the hooting was a month back, but it was only once, she started doing it every night (without a cough/sneeze on the end) 3 days back.

Ouch, that is a difficult one!

Could this list here help you? There are no specialist guinea pig rescues listed for Stockholm and I am sure whether any of these shelters will take in guinea pigs. http://www.yelp.co.uk/search?cflt=animalshelters&find_loc=Stockholm
I know of two, not sure if both are in Stockholm, so only one I know for sure, which I don't know if they will take in a (potentionally) sick guinea pig. She is very young, only a couple months, btw.

Are you sure it's not an allergy? Hooting is connected to heart issues but can also be a sign of a URI (it does not always mean the others get it) or allergies or even dust up the nose.

The only thing to be allergic to would be hay, maybe rat or hamster, but can guienea pigs be allergic to other animals? They don't meet the rats and the hamster, they are in the same room as the, tough. And also, cat and dog hair? that would be a hard one to solve, seeing as moving the rats or the hamster just doesn't work with how theres cats and a dog in the other rooms.

It could be a certain type of hay. Unfortunately only a vet can diagnose. Is your Mum not able to help with vet fees?

Unfortunately not at the moment, we get all our money on the 18th, and don't have much right now.

i think it would be a good idea to have an initial vet visit first to talk it through and depending on what they say, then worry about the next step. perhaps your mum could help out just for this appointment. at least then you will have a better idea of what is going on. it may not be as bad as you think.

uri's don't always pass to other pets so it could be that. it could be sensitivities to the environment. hard to say without a check up by a vet.

I am not sure how we can help, if she hasn't been diagnosed and you can't get to a vet, then I would speak to one of the rescues Wiebke linked to. She is very young for a heart condition but it is not unheard of, I know of 2 6 month old pigs diagnosed with a heart problem.

How is her breathing? is she nodding when she breathes?

What is she bedded on? shavings?

some vets will offer a payment plan. for the sake of this initial appointment, i think it's more than worth asking, as obviously the piggy cannot just be left with a suspected illness. good luck :)

She breathes, eats, plays, runs, escapes my yands when I reach for her, sleeps, cuddles, drinks and do everything normal, it's just the hooting sounds that are off, and even when she makes them, if I reach for her, she storms away like a car. They are currently housed on fabrics, no fabric wash with perfume is used, just the kind that is for sensitive noses.

Ok, hooting on it's own (especially not followed by a cough) and her behaviour do not convince me that this is heart related. What type of hay do you feed? are there any air fresheners or scented candles in the room or nearby? What are the other animals bedded on?

The other animals are housed on alder, a hard wood shaving bedding which is not dusty, the hamster has his sand, and that is dusty, bvut he has a bin cage, so non of it flies out when he bathes in it. The hay is not stated what kind of hay it is, so I'm not sure, it's the one of hay that I can get easily as the nearest "farm" is very far away.

I don't think theres any fresheners unless the house has them built in, and theres no candes in the room.

Ok, are the hamsters in the same room?

I am just trying to think of possibilities, I am still thinking it is either a URI (especially as the daily hooting is only recent) or a reaction to something.

The hamster and the rats are in the same room.

I have a piggie who had a particularly bad URI a couple of years ago. It cleared up and she is fine now, but particularly in winter she struggles with the room when it gets too humid and hot, and starts making a couple of hooty noises. We try to keep the room warm for us but make sure that we ventilate it out every couple of hours to let her breathe :) x

Ok, am thinking the shavings are a possibility if she is particularly sensitive. Like PottyForPiggies says humidity can play a part too.

A vet visit is needed though to rule out a URI or heart issue.

Not sure what to do if it is the bedding, we have had the bedding for a long time before she started making the noises.

It may not be that then. You could move them into a different room temporarily to see if it makes a difference?

I can't move any animals out of the room at all, theres are cats and a dog in the other rooms and I wouldn't have time for them if they were in another room because rats and hamsters are night active, when other people are asleep,.

Then maybe you could temporarily change the bedding to maybe carefresh and see if that makes a difference?
