I have noticed that cousin Amelia has made a strange hooting sound when she is a bit stressed she does not cough and in every other way seems fine I have only herd her do it about three times but thought it best to get her checked out as quick as we can,luckily the lovely lady from BARC is going with a guinea to the vets we go to on Thursday and is taking cousin Amelia for us as we are both working . is hooting always a sign of hart problems or could it be something else? I am so worried
 
It could be heart then, but the vet will need to make the diagnosis :( One of mine used to hoot occasionally when I used to put their washed veggies in a bowl or on a plate, turns out she was inhaling a little water each time she would bury her nose in the food! Once I started scattering them she never did it again.
 
It can be a sign of a heart condition especially if they cough at the end. It can also be a sign of allergies too. Does she do or have any of the following:

Random coughing especially when eating or being handled
Laboured breathing
Nodding in time with breathing
Difficult to rouse from sleep
Bumblefoot
Weight loss
Repeated upper or lower respiratory infections
Ascites (fluid on her sides)
Fluid on her chest or heart (only a vet would be able to detect that)
Abdominal bloating
Blue extremities such as lips, nose, ears and feet

If it is heart don't panic, I have 6 heart pigs and Sophie has literally been officially diagnosed and put on meds tonight at the vets.
 
Not sure about the weight loss as we only got her last Wednesday (she is five )
Could not see any blue on lips etc I did look for that ,none of the other things that we would notice and my sister in law said she had never been I'll, I don't think she would have noticed unless very I'll. Everything about her seems fine
 
Ah yes of course. What is her weight at the moment? I would say definitely get her checked out and in the meantime monitor her for any of the things I have mentioned. I have access to a wonderful heart article my friend has written and can give you her website details if needed.
 
Just thought ,she was kept on wood shavings for years and when she came with some they even irritated me and I don't react it was really horrible stuff
 
It is a possibility, they can cause respiratory issues. What is she bedded on now?
 
I have yet been able to weigh her as no matter what she will not stay on scales but was planning to buy a plastic bowl to pop her in. She is staying at the BARC lady's at the moment until Friday so she will weigh her for us :D
 
Could you let me know her weight when she is weighed if possible? I know if she is low her poor previous diet etc will be a factor but heart pigs can be very low in weight before being diagnosed. My Fuzzy was 623g on arrival and is now just under 1000g.
 
Yes I will, thank you so much for your help I feel terrible I didn't get her weight but I was worrying about upsetting her as she had such a poor life it was silly of me:(
 
GOOD NEWS :yahoo:All well hart seems healthy and she is fine. So happy and thank you lovely lady from BARC for getting her to the vets for us, she said the vet and her love her she is so chilled:D

Thank you I have been at work today and
could hardly think straight until i herd she was ok. I am picking her up in the morning and have missed her so much.

Aww that is lovely. I really hope she can be bonded with Edward and Ms Simpson. It would be lovely for her to have company.
 
The lady from BARC said Edward and Mrs Simpson are really layed back and so is cousin Amelia so when the times comes she said she would be surprised if there would be a problem . so fingers crossed
 
she is such a lovely piggy, Nicky. She likes to sit nestled in her hay and watch what is going on with the other piggies. She has none of the other heart symptoms, her weight is 825g but she doesn't feel underweight, she is quite a petite pig. I haven't hear any hooting and she runs around with no difficulty, her breathing is normal. The vet (Elly at Alfreton ) gave Amelia a clean bill of health. Lets hope she has a long happy life with Edward and Mrs. Simpson xx

Thank you so much pig in the city for all the help you give us. We are ordering another cage tomorrow (my husband thinks we are collecting them ) so when they go together they will have more room . we are rearranging the house lol
