Hi,
My guinea pig snoop has started making this quiet almost hooting noise today and it’s been constant, unfortunately i haven’t been able to get him to the vet due to university studies. I’m not entirely sure what it is as it’s a new thing and only started this morning, but he hasn’t stopped making it. He’s only slightly off in himself as he’s still eating and drinking, I'm just not sure what this is caused by.

Hooting is generally a sign of an obstruction in the airway, usually due to hay dust.

However if it doesn’t clear with a sneeze or continues for more than a few hours then he does need to see a vet as it can be a sign that it is more than a minor obstruction. Even more so given you mention he is ‘slightly off’.

We would recommend that you switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him daily (each morning) as it is the only way to more closely monitor hay intake and prepare to step in with syringe feeding if he loses weight. If he is feeling un well or having any breathing issues then hay intake can reduce but you’d never notice by eye (hence the importance of weight checks)

I hope he is ok

thank you, I'm going to take him to a vet asap as he’s becoming more lethargic and i’d rather catch whatever this could be earlier than later.

Like everyone else said, hooting is a sign of mild airway obstruction- it could be minor irritation from the environment, but it could also be a sign of a respiratory infection or fluid build-up or something else needing attention. If it's been constant and he seems a little off, the vet is the best idea.
