Is is ok to hoover in the vacinity of piggies or does it scare them too much? My new mums and babies are in my spare room at the minute (I normally keep my pigs outside) and all the hay, megazorb etc on the carpet is driving me mad! Can i hoover it up?

I think most loud noises scare them but it is something they get used to and it would only be for a few minutes...maybe hoover outside with the door closed, open it then go in. Chances are they will run off and hide for a time but will soon venture out.
I hoover our piggies pens out twice a day and they go absolutely bonkers, popcorning all over the place as they know it's feeding time so they have learned to associate the noisy machine with food :x

great thanks Guinea Pig Slave. The mess has been driving me CRAZY! I'm enjoying having them inside and not having to venture out in the wet to feed etc but I don't think I could keep them inside all the time, too messy! lol

Maybe treat them every time the hoover comes out so they think of it as a good thing and not to be scared off?

My younger boars hate the hoover and flee but are slowly taking longer to flee around it.

My older boars ignore it completely. They used to popcorn around it and occasionally still do. I'm still not sure why.

We have 18 piggies in six large double level pens in our lounge and it has become a part of life now with them. Hardly get any mess from them apart from when I'm deep cleaning them out then I'm knee deep in vet bed, fleece etc.
Also have a handy little hand held vac for the 'rogue' bits of hay and poops that slingshoot their way out of the pens...;)

Well, signs that are scared are if they start doing rumbling noises. But if you do it regularly they will soon get used to it (like most noises) and realise the big evil hoover isn't going to do anything to them!

I'm a hoover freak and used to hoover twice a day when they lived inside, they weren't bothered at all as I done it so much :o

Now my young quails and parakeets don't care :))

I have to hoover everyday as mine are inside. Some love the sound of the hoover and run out wheeking at it. Amelia ran for cover the first day she heard it but hasn't been bothered since, they'll soon get used to it.

As outdoor piggies ours have never heard the hoover. However my Ruby loves the hairdryer and will sit and lick you whilst being dried x)
Little Tia flinches at camera flashes and the shutter click on a camera so I dread to think what would happen if I hoovered near her.

My piggies are not phased by the hoover, infact it seems to send them into a popcorning frenzy. I think they must find the vibrations soothing. A phone ringing however will send them all dashing into their pigloos for cover. When I hoover their room, they all just continue what I'm doing as though I'm not there.

i hoover around my piggies the first few times they ran into there hides but now they sit at the front of the cage watching me :))

I'm a complete hoover freak too and i hoover round them including with the nozzel! they're used to it now, one doesn't like it much but the other 3 carry on munching as normal rolleyes
Mine also live next door to the washing machine so in the kitchen so they're used to all sorts. In return as we're in the kitchen so much they're incredibly tame lol..

I Hoover with them in the cage on a morning and then they get their breakfast. So they now sniff the Hoover as guess they are thinking hurry up, food time.
