Right, I officially can't get anyone to take me the 90 mile drive to the closest centre that does bonding (joanne at hutches) as my partners car is on it's last legs and doubt its safe enough to make it 180 miles. I'm so gutted. Do any of you know anywhere that might let me take guinea pigs home for trial runs to see if they get on with my pigs?...This sounds really unlikely but i really really want friends for my pigs (2 girls who live side by side) but can't afford for it to go wrong and them not get along. Any ideas would be amazing. I'm kind of expecting replies telling me i'll just have to risk it, but thought i'd ask anyway. I'm desperate lol :(
I've been wondering what you guys think about getting pets from people on sites like gumtree from people who wish to give their pets away for reasons such as "kids don't bother with them anymore" and "no time". If you are sure the person is not a breeder or trying to sell animals for financial gain but simply do not want the animal anymore? Is this not like adoption? If i was to offer to give them a trial with my pigs to see if they bond with mines with the understanding that would be able to return them if things don't work out.
This is a very sketchy idea as I doubt anyone would accept my offer and I just don't trust at all that I would have the heart to hand them back anyway. ahhhh :(

Just a thought, if a rescue offers bonding, you may get help with a piggy train to take the piggies to the rescue for bonding and then a piggy train back when the rescue is happy with the bonding.
@Stewybus

As for free ads, at the end of the day you are giving them a good home, and the choice is yours. Obviously though as you said you'd probably want to make sure your not helping a breeder out. :')

Hmm well the problem with gumtree and stuff is you'd need to wait a few weeks to have them in quarantine and then try the bonding. My best bet would be to get the piggies, do the quarantine and if it doesn't work then see if you can find a friend or someone to take them.
As your piggies are girls they have a much better chance at bonding unlike with boys so I don't think you'll struggle too much. I'd suggest just getting a single female piggie and trying her with one of the piggies and if she doesn't work with her try her with the other. There's probably a chance she'll work with one of them. =) Boys on the other hand I'd definitely reccomend trying a rescue but I've done the gumtree route before and succesfully bonded boars by myself but I had backup plans too in case anything went wrong.

Obviously if you can't get to a rescue you can't get to a rescue.

Best of luck.

If you get guinea pigs from gumtree you cannot be sure of their health or if they are pregnant. Often people want to get rid of ill piggies. You will have to quarantine them in a separate room and get them vet checked. If you can cope with all that then go for it. Hopefully the piggy train will be able to help you.

yeah, this seems like the best idea. I really don't want to use gumtree (I have done this in the past because I couldnt stop myself) because I feel like it encourages breeding and lets people treat their pets as disposable. Do you know if the SSPCA put single guinea pigs up for adoption or do they pair them before allowing them to go up?
I think I'm just going to chance it, if it goes wrong i can build the C&C up the way so it's not taking over my entire floor lol. I'd rather leave the piggy bus for sick piggy's or in the event i'm desperate with a sick dental piggy or something (touch wood). Oh, also, do I still quarentine with SSPCA pigs, yeah?

Where about in Scotland are you from?
I wouldn't risk getting a guinea pig from gumtree. Although it is sad seeing the unwanted piggies in tiny cages :(

SSPCA do rehome single piggies. I have seen some on their website before when I was looking for a sow for my bereaved sow.

I know, Gumtree is where i got Luna from, a woman was advertising her with a photo of her in a cage the size of a hamsters explaining she had found her in a bin and didn't know what to do with her. She had al sorts of issues like ovarian cysts, a permanently very deformed feet from overgrown nails so she cant climb into anything that's more than half an inch of the floor, vitamin deficiency, pea eye, and skin issues and a URI. :( I'm so glad I took her, I don't regret it at all, she would most definitely have died a long time ago if i hadn't.
I live in Glasgow, I'm definitely gunna start checking the SSPCA site every few days from now on. I'll need to get council consent first because they don't let you adopt any animal without it. I hope consent doesn't take long to come through :/

Awwww such a shame! At least she now has a loving home with you now. I take it your 2 current sows don't get on or is there another reason they aren't together? It's worth emailing the SSPCA saying you're interested in re homing a guinea pig when one becomes available. They will then send you a questionnaire to fill in and send back so you will already be on their records when a piggy does come up for adoption :) that's what they sent me but I didn't need it as got a piggy fromJ oanne at a Hutches. It really is a shame you can't get there. I would have been willing to help but I live in the opposite direction from you.

Yeah, the don't get along. Cocos sisters died last year and she was the dominant one and tried to do the same with Luna when she came along, but she wasnt having any of it. They ended up in a massive fight with fur flying everywhere so i seperated them. I've tried to reintroduce them several times, but the fighting has just got progessively worse so I stopped trying months ago, lol. Aww that's brilliant. I'll send one tonight! I know you didn't use it, but did they get back to you quickly? yea, it's crap. I wish more places could offer bonding. :/

Aww that's a shame :( From what I remember they did reply fairly quick, maybe the next day or so. Not sure how quick they will be at this time of year as they may have staff on holiday etc.
