I caught the little eating an elastic band mallethead

I got them both out for their nightly cuddle and while I was checking Franks bum & legs I look down to see Fang chopping away and an elastic band disappearing. I grabbed him as quick as I could and wrestled it off him. Luckily there was a little tiny bit sticking out his mouth for me to grab but the wasn't giving it up easy. I managed to pull it out his mouth but the band was broken and no longer joined so I'm just hoping he hasn't swollowed abit.

It's my own fault I should have cleaned everything up off the table before I put them on there mallethead

Hopefully there wont be any ill effects, but keep a close eye!

If it makes you feel any better..

Poggle and I were playing tug of war with a piece of cotton (an offcut of material I had lying about - about 10 cm long by 2 wide) about 6 months ago. He's usually good and drops it if I lose, but he snaffled the whole thing down.

I panicked around and feared the worst, but he was fine. Little !

you should never allow a piggy to play with cotton as if they eat it it can become entangled in the intestine and as the intestine contracts and relaxes durong digestion it acts like cheese wire slicing away at the soft intestine. You were very lucky your piggy was ok

I think everyone who has owned a pig, can think of something that occurred as a new owner, they know now but didn't then, that they would never do again.

Luckily, my pig was fine. But he did see the emergency vet that night, routine vet in the morning and then routine vet 2 days later to make sure there were no ill effects to be dealt with.

I didn't think that was particually relevent as the OP's pig has only nibbled a little elastic band not the whole thing and I thought undue stress probably wasn't the best thing to add to the thread.

Next time I'll add more to show that I realise it was irresponsible, but I'm not completely stupid, especially when it comes to pigs.

Nobody's perfect. We all make mistakes!

I know a lot more about guinea pigs than I did with my first piggie! The way they are looked after is so different to how my very first was. He was looked after well but I just listened to what the pet shop told me rather than doing research and learning myself.

We all learn and do our best for our piggies :) as above nobody is perfect!

OP - I hope your piggie is fine! Naughty little thing!

Hopefully, as the elastic band wasn't whole it will just pass through with no ill effects. Mine have got hold of things they shouldn't have before. It's hard to keep an eye on them all at the same time. I'm sure everyone has been in a similar situation at some point with their pigs :))
The seem to be quite hardy things. With all the plastic bags mine have chewed through that have been too close to the cage they have never had any problems mallethead I've learnt my lesson now :))

He seems his usual self this morning thankfully.
The thing was while he has chomping it he looked so pleased with himself.

It's completely my fault. I had some washing on the table and the elastic band must have been just underneath where I couldnt see it.

Their favourit thing to chew at the moment is their puppy pad in their cage rolleyes

I can't imagine the cotton thing is any different to iff a pig chews their cosy cup.

I have one that you have to watch like a hawk, he's chewed furniture, a rubber door matt, plastic, all sorts. Once I had a man come to service the boiler and he put his tool box down by the cage and fuzzy pulled the fabric carry strap through and chewed his way all the way through it......")

Glad to hear your boy is ok Rachel. Naughty rolleyes

My guinea pigs have managed to get hold of many naughty things in the 5 years I have had piggies. To name a few they have nibbled plastic bags, rubber door mats, pulled the thread out of fleeces, chewed through a cord of a drawstring bag and yesterday one was nibbling one of my plants mallethead

All has been my fault for taking my eye off them but there has been no damage done and they have never eaten enough to harm them.

S'mores found a lovely collection of fruit loop cereal that had been dropped then apparently kicked further under the table. I found him crunching away. Panicked and tried to get him and he grabs another and runs..... Like ha ha human I got another. His poo was a bit odd colored but he's fine.

Op I wouldn't feel bad,crap happens!

Could be worse, Had to rush my grand daughter to A&E on Sunday as she was spotted with a drinking straw in a bottle of nail polish remover.

Glad your piggie is ok. My girl sherbert is awful when it comes to plastic bags if i leave one anywhere near the cage she'll have it mallethead luckily i've always caught her in the act before she's done any damage to herself.
I also had Pumpkin (RIP) eat a tassel off one of my scarves :{ never worn scarves while handling my piggies again :p

aww I'm happy that your guinea pigs okay, :) Pepper used to love plastic bags! I remember Mum once had to have a tug of war with him over one! :(|):))

My Pickles is a serial chewer, she will eat absolutely everything. I have to be really careful when I'm holding her because she'll eat my hair, clothes, shoes; pretty much everything and anything!

This is why I had a fringe cut in, one chewed so high up at the front.. I have a few hair chewers, I never realise until they're munching happily away at my ever shorter hair haha.

I don't think anyone one here would deliberately give their pig anything potentially harmful!

Billy likes to chew correx I noticed last night, anyone else have this?!

Yes two out of my four have destroyed correx, have to wrap my fleece right over the edge and under and bull dog clip it on mallethead
