Hello

Well after having our dear cat put to sleep yesterday we were going to wait until after are hols in a weeks time before getting two piggies but we just can't believe how empty the house seems with no pets it's awful and we need something else to love and spoil. Lot's of tears have been shed over the last couple of days but we have a days hols tomorrow and are taking the first step in purchasing things for piggies mum is happy to look after them when we have our hols if we can get two from the rescue home before next Saturday. just one thing I'm not sure of is what to put in the bottom of the cage is it ok to use newspaper right at the bottom then what's the best thing to put on top? I've been reading lots of info on here which has been a brilliant help. And I'm so glad I've found this forum!

Hi Alison

Have a look at the section on housing on here, & what people use for bedding. Lots of people now use fleece or vetbed. If you can avoid using wood shavings then do, they may contribute to respiratory problems, but some people use them without any trouble at all. I am pigless at the moment but really hope to become a piglet mummy after my holiday, as I wouldn't get some then put them into boarding as it wouldn't be fair so have decided to wait like you :)

I can definitely say that they are the sweetest, most rewarding pets I have ever had as you can probably tell from the forum most of us on here feel that way. You will never want to be without one again lol!

Thank you I'm hoping they will help ease our pain and I'm sure they will be loads of fun. We popped to P@H not to purchase from there but just to watch and listen at them we just love the noise they make, I think I'll just spend every evening watching them!

If you have the space & can keep them indoors then they will get very friendly & become very entertaining! They are sensitive to chemicals, like household sprays etc so try to keep them away from those, feed them really fresh foods like the ones listed here : http://www.guinealynx.info/chart.html that is a really good site, & there are good books by piggie guru Peter Gurney out there which give a good care guide.

I am sure you won't regret it, if you can get them from a rescue, & have a read through the threads on here about Pets at Home as there have been a few problems with piggies from there depending on the area where you live. Rescue piggies are usually checked thoroughly first & there are so many desperate for a good home.

Good luck & enjoy them you will wonder why you took so long to discover what wonderful creatures they are lol! :))

Thank you for all your help there is a little rescue place a couple of villages away and the lady loves them all so i know they are all cared for and are handled lots. Yes are piggies are definitely staying indoors with us. If they are sensitive to household sprays etc thats a great excuse for not doing the housework!
