This morning Horatio has a cloudy right eye: no sign of injury, no redness, can't see anything in it & he's not bothered by me inspecting it or touching near to his eye.

Horatio is 8 months old & lives with his (mostly) friend Bertie who is 10 months old.

We are off to the vet later on so they can look in his eye with the teeny light to check it's all ok. I assume he's managed to poke hay in it or something similar as he loves burrowing in hay. I would certainly hope he's too young for cataracts!

Have other people been given eye drops by the vet for this type of thing? I'm hoping it will resolve without treatment as Horatio isn't the easiest boy to handle but we'll see how we get on. He still thinks we are going to eat him every time we pick him up.

Horatio & Bertie are quite stressy pigs & neither of them is very brave in the carry box rolleyes. I am debating whether to take Bertie along to the vets too to keep Horatio company but am not sure if this will just make Bertie insanely stressed too. Is it better to have one stressed piggie alone in the box or 2 stressed piggies winding each other up but maybe being a little comfort for each other? They are silly boys these two...

Sometimes eye pokes don't show up until they start ulcerating, so any eye problem needs to be seen by a vet. good that you have already booked him in!

I found that the best way of getting drops into uncooperative piggies' eyes is by sitting them on my lap, facing away, and placing a platter with a heap of grass or hay in front. Treat once they are absorbed in the food - your chances of getting something in without too much wiggling are much bigger as piggies don't multitask.

Yes eye drops will clear it up when my boy had an eye injury caused by a hay poke his eye went cloudy but a few days on eye drops it healed. Try wrapping your boy in a towel or blanket with his head sticking out.

Horatio had the stain in his eye & it showed a very small superficial scratch at one side. Inside the top eyelid was a bit red too.

The vet suggested Fucithalmic gel / cream stuff which is licensed here (UK) for rabbits (nothing specifically licensed for guineas of course). I thought I would check it out & pick up the gel in the morning. The vet said that was fine.

I have searched it on here & guinealynx & seen it has been used ok in guineas so will go ahead & start treating him tomorrow.

Horatio was very calm at the vets, I took him by himself in the end rather than freak out Bertie too. I think he was so calm because he was afraid but he sat perfectly still for the examination & cheered up ok when we got home :)

The idea of piggies not being able to multitask really made me laugh :(|) - you're so right! If I ever need to distract my boys it's with food of course, they are pretty much food-fixated & certainly have single-track minds!

Hope it clears up soon x

I hope that it clears up quickly! Eye injuries usually do, and you will find that the gel goes in much better as soon as the eye is less sore and painful.

My piggies have been prescribed fucithalmic on several occasions with good results.

I hope Horatio's eye heal soon, it's always frightening when they hurt themselves. Is it anything like Mink'y eye in the thread about Minky's lump. Unfortunately Minky is now blind in her right eye but she's getting around great without it.

I have used Fucithalmic drops lots of times, they are perfectly safe to use.

Yep, picked them up earlier - now for the dosing!

Oh now the fun begins! {:| if you have someone to help it makes it a bit easier to put them in.

I found it easiest by placing Minky on the floor next to me & tilting her head slightly to administer the eye drop. For more boisterous piggies then an extra pair of hands would be a big help.

No problem at all with the eye drops, I sat Horatio on my lap facing away from me as suggested by Wiebke & just popped it in. No fuss, no wriggling - he seems quite happy about the whole thing! He's had 48 hours of it now & the slight redness has gone & the cloudiness is looking much better :)

Well done you and well done little Horatio for being a good boy for his mum :)

When my boy Parker was to get his eye drops in what a carry on! he would shut his eye as tight as he could......the little devil {:| or blink just as the drop came out the tube leaving him with a white ring round his eye :))

Five days on the Fucithalmic & Horatio's eye is looking back to normal. We have finished the course now & hope that he can keep hay out of his eye from now on :)

Great to hear this x
