Daisy is feeling very miserable, she has nibbled some hay, grass and some lettuce but very depressed and tensed up. I am trying to syringe feed her but not give her too much and stuff her up, it’s a real balance isn’t it? She hates the food too. I knew this one would be tough and can see a few very stressful days ahead for sure. So sorry she wasn’t feeling great yesterday but I’m so glad her op went well! :hug:Really hope she feels better today now some of the nasty anaesthetic has worn off!🤞❤️

Thank you! She is not great this morning still, but nibbled on some grass and cucumber. She has had 12 ml syringe food at 6am and will give her some more later with the aim of 50-60ml today, she is tiny so I dont want to overload her. Whats frustrating is she just goes to eat then changes her mind and heart breaking to watch as she loves her food. She is also very zoned out.

Ah well, at least I was ready for this and thank goodness for working from home! x
 
Glad she’s nibbled something bless her! I guess it’s not even 24 hours since her op so must be still feeling rather rough from all the drugs, especially being a tiny piglet! Aw poor little lady, hope the meds wear off more throughout the day and she’s not as dopey ❤️ My RB Jess was really ‘out of it’ for the first couple of days after her eye removal op with her being a tiny oldie and it was hard to see when she was so outgoing and confident normally! But hopefully she’s soon back to her lovely self! :hug:

Hi Guys

As an update, without jinxing her..... all seems to be going well. I am still syringe feeding her but dont seem to be reliant on it and she is eating pretty well. She has lost some weight (about 60g) but I dont know how much ovaries weigh lol!

She was completely out of it until about 4pm yesterday when she just suddenly perked up (a sign was the fact she nibbled my nose which is her go to ' I love you mum' thing). She is now bickering with her sister in the indoor cage :hb: . She has cleaned herself up well and seems very able to get to her hind end without any issues which I am amazed at! She has started nipping me when I am syringing her and if she can, she grabs the syringe and throws it across the room...so taking that as a good sign! I am being cautious though, it can be so up and down with these little fur babies!

What was strange was her reaction after the op. Others have just tended to be sleepy and dazed but it was as if she didn't recognise me or her surrounding, it was like dealing with a terrified new guinea. Her eyes were wide open and had a look of extreme fear, her whole body was so tense she felt like a little brick and she just wanted to run from everything. Not seen that before in a post op guinea. But all soft and lovely now after a lot of cuddles and warmth.

@Betsy Unfortunately they ended up going in 'underneath', I have not spoken to John yet (speaking to him tomorrow) but I think they did the whole lot.

So keep sending the healing vibes but so far so good! xx
 
The Ever Beautiful Betsy had an emergency spay at the beginning of Lockdown 1 last year and knows what Daisy is going through and is sending loads of healing wheaky wheaks.

She says thank you very much, she says she's feeling a little weird at the moment.
 
Haha I think Daisy would agree! She seems much more ‘normal’ tonight. Her eyes are back to their usual size and colour and she has been eating like crazy..put on 23g since 9am... long may it last! To be honest I am stunned at how tough she has been, keeping herself clean and eating as much as she can. Very proud of her. She’s is such a wonderful girl and I honestly thought I would lose her..the relief so far is immense! Xx
 
Well clearly Daisy is feeling much better. Last seen chasing her poor long suffering sister around and back to humping again...it’s not even been a week!

I appreciate that old habits die hard, she has probably got a lot of hormones coursing through still and she is establishing herself again since her op...but really! :hb::hb:
 
Just a quick update in case anyone else is having hormonal issues with female guineas. Daisy was spayed about 2 months ago and it was the best thing I could have done. I will post a picture shortly but she is still a complete maniac but a very happy one. Layla is no longer getting humped and therefore her cystitis is happening less and less (vet thought it was stress related). They both spend inordinate amount of time doing zoomies and doing the biggest popcorns you have ever seen. Daisy surpassed herself last night with the largest popcorn I have seen, she then tripped when she landed and fell head first into the C&C....nothing damaged other than her pride lol!

I was so so nervous about this op and you guys helped in my decision making and I now have two happy comedians who keep me regularly amused!

The hormones tend to take a bit longer to settle down than expected but a spay can really make such a difference to a pair or group of sows when you are dealing with a really hormonal sow; it is putting an enormous stress not just on the sows themselves but on their companions, too, and can even make a separation/split necessary.

Glad that all has gone well and that there are two happy sows and a delighted owner now!

Here is the little monkey...the white one is Daisy and Layla is the other one. Not the best photos but they never stand still long enough!

I lost one to a spay a number of years ago so I was so nervous. But now I quote the famous line 'I wish I had done it sooner'! Whats nice is its not changed her personality, she is as crazy as ever but in a calmer way (if that makes any sense!)

Having had a number of spayed sows myself; no, it doesn't change their personality one bit, it just takes the nonstop bitchiness and edginess out of the equation.

it is always harder when you face the same operation again that you have lost a previous piggy to. It was tough for me to consent to Cariad's emergency spay in 2013 after I lost Fflur in 2010 to a basic mistake. But Cariad lived for another a 2 years and was able to reach a normal healthy life span because of her spay... ;)
 
Aw Daisy and Layla are gorgeous @Guinea Slave :luv: So pleased Daisy’s doing so well! And Layla is getting a rest from the humping and her cystitis is improving!

So pleased that everything is going so well for Daisy and that Layla is reaping the benefit of Daisy's surgery, too. I've had several sows spayed and have never regretted it with any of them. The future looks bright for your ladies.
 
Thanks both! They are so happy and hilarious now its a joy to watch. Had them in last night for the evening and once we put them back in the shed daisy spent 10 minutes just doing zoomies. I must remember to take my camera with me next time! No wonder she is so slim and fit and then spends so much time fast asleep..its like having a puppy..only she's about 3 years old!

If I ever have this issue again I wont hesitate to make the right decision.
