Hormonal Therapy For Ovarian Cysts?

If anyone's being following my other threads, you'll know my 5year old girl is struggling with ovarian cysts.

My vet was 99% sure she had cysts but didn't perform a scan as she said she'd only do that if I wanted to have her spayed. At the time, because of her age and how weak she is, I decided not to go through with such an invasive procedure. My vet then said the only other thing I could was manage it with pain killers, which I don't think have been working that all.

Someone on here mentioned hormone therapy and I've been looking into it a bit. I was just wondering if I could have some information off you guys that have maybe gone through it before.

What types of hormone have you used? I've seen quite a few types. How often have they had to have it?
Has it cleared it up or is it just a temporary measure?
Will it help her with the pain?
Roughly how much will it cost, if you don't mind me asking?
Is it painful? I read somewhere that she'd have to be knocked out to have it done!

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to find out the best thing for my girl.

I had a piggie before with ovarian cysts. The vet that i had seen said something like hormonal therapy only being effective if its in the early stages, not with quite big cysts, because eventually large cysts would need removal due to the pressure they put on other organs/body parts that may cause further health problems.

That was the general gist of what was said - please bear in mind this is my memory from several years ago now though.

But upon hearing that information and as my piggie had large cysts I went ahead with an operation immediately.

I'm sorry I can't answer your questions above but i'm pretty sure a Health Advisor from the forum will reply to you soon with more info.

Hi there my Ellie had reoccurring uti's &heavy bleeding especially when she pooped.
She was around 6 years old.
She had none of the textbook symptoms of ovarian cysts- stroppy/hormonal, crusty nipples, hair thinning especially on their sides, etc. Just the uti's&bleeding.

The vet wanted to investigate further as she didnt want to just dish out antibiotics when they weren't clearing it up.

Ellie had a conscious ultrasound that showed a walnut sized lump ovarian cyst. The vet said a spay. Or draining was the only options but due to her age she didnt want to operate as the risk was too high& she would use anaesthetic for both options.

I suggested the hormone injections as I had found out mostly from here that that was another choice to consider.
The vet agreed to try the chorulon injections after phoning the manufacturers whilst I was there to find out more &dosages etc.

The injections are actually cattle hormones, Ellie had hers- 2 injections 7-10days apart. The bleeding stopped within days, the lump decreased in size,her general mood seemed more relaxed &her coat went all shiney&silky. The injections lasted about 12months &she had another round of 2 injections as the lump had come back &she seemed quiet &not her usual self. Apparently cysts are very painful especially when they are small or growing. So your guinea may show signs of pain, lack of appetite, subdued, biting at hair/barbering.
Ellie had metacam for a painkiller for a short while after her injections.
I lost Ellie around 2yrs later to multiple health issues &I think she only had one bleed after her injections.

Ellie had no bad side effects but with some sows the injections simply just dont work. I can't remember seeing any other negative side effects from other members on here.

Get your cavy savvy vet to investigate &feel free to ask if I can provide any more info.

basically Ellie had the (HCG) Chorulon hormone injections (cattle hormone) 2 jabs 7 - 10 days apart approx £20 each jab plus the consultation fee & metacam painkiller, she was around 6yrs old & considered by the vet to be too old for a spay. about 12months later she had another 2jabs as the cyst had grown again.
the jabs were successful for Ellie & a bit of bribery with her favourite foods immediately after the jabs (apparently painful) & she stopped squealing like a diva seconds later!

Thanks for that it was really helpful and interesting to read. The main thing in concerned with is it being really painful. I don't want to put Bonnie through loads of pain. Did she give the injections whilst she was awake?

Yep everything was fully conscious- the ultrasound to discover the cyst &the jabs, they were all in her back leg /rump area.

She was a real diva &squeaked the place down for about 10seconds....
Well -the amount of time it took me to get her favourite nom-noms from my pocket to her mouth! Naww
Go armed with a handful of dandelions or grass for the bribe

Ellie was much easier going again afterwards when it had kicked in &she had no uti's (heavy vaginal bleeding) afterwards which was why the vet scanned her originally

I think with her the few seconds of injection pain was worth it as she was vastly improved &the cystic ovaries didnt give her pain afterwards. Metacam on standby for a few days afterwards though to help out.
