Hi there just want to gather thoughts/experiences of the hormone implant.
Background info… Mrs Chicken is the sassiest, funny, confident sow I’ve ever owned. A rescue pig age - maybe 2 ish. Has had attitude since I’ve had her but I’ve felt it’s been on the increase (her husboar Halloumi, definitely seems more hen pecked than usual!) Booked her in for an UltraSound today to check Ovaries… one unable to view, the other does have a definite increase in normal size and obvious on the scan but not massively worrying atm.
Discussed options hormonal implant v surgery. Agreed not urgent atm so have gone away to think about it. Injections not possible as the vet can’t get them. Vet is exotic but is more used to mid line surgery spays but happy to do flank ovariectomy if that’s what I want to go for. I’ve experience of surgical spays but not hormone implant. Just wondered others experiences. I can see the benefit of ruling out how much hormones are involved with her more than sassy behaviour by having the implant ( vet said if it’s hormonal you should see changes in 2 weeks) and less invasive etc but she did say research is limited regarding its efficacy and how long it might work for. Also if there is evidence of an ovarian cyst there even if small atm are we likely to end up needing surgery anyway? She did say implant could shrink it/stop it growing but again the big question is how long… especially bearing in mind she’s a young pig and more likely to cope with surgery better..,, thoughts anyone? Pic of Mrs Chicken on her little back legs determined to get that hay ( cos she’s so blooming adorable)
