Hi

We're going to the Vets tonight for a 2nd hormone injection for our wee Fudge.

She had a 2 course injection 3 months ago and the vet confirmed that she is likely to go through this process every 2-3 months.

He has stated that there is a hormone implant, but they have never tried it in their practice.

Has anyone else used this implant before? How long does it last and are there any risks?

Thanks

Chock

There is a hormone inplant for male dogs that arent castrated. I'm not sure if they can use it in guinea pigs though. I'm not sure if its the right hormone at all? Its like a microchip. So it would be one huge injection if it was used in a piggie.

I've microchipped smaller animals than guinea pigs - wasnt easy mind!

We visited the vet and he gave us more information.

It's like a small microchip that will get injected in the chest area, he would give about 10 secs of gas to calm her before giving the injection.

it can last upto 2 years, the cost is £55 for the implant and £18 for the gas.

Someone else wanted to do it last week, but the cysts were too big to even think about it. Usually it's performed on dogs, but more vets are giving this to guinea pigs as time goes on.

We've got about 2-3 months before the cysts will grow back, so we have time to think about it.

will post more info as I learn more.

I don't know if it helps, but my piggie had ovarian cysts & only needed 2 injections, after that they settled down & never gave anymore trouble. If it is an untried treatment personally I would wait & give it a bit more time, or has it been used successfully in how many piggies? :)
