Dear all,

Happy Saturday!

I have another conundrum.

My guinea pigs are called Trixie and Elvira - however, Elvira is getting VERY frisky and keeps on trying to constantly frisson with Trixie at the moment -( who is having NONE of it). It looks as if my two mops are constantly attempting to become one - to quote the Spice Girls.

It is clear that Trixie is not into Elvira THAT way, nor wants the relationship to go any further. Is it right for me to intervene and seperate them for a bit, or just let them argue it out? I feel uncomfortable watching it - because Elvira is VERY persistent and Trixie is significantly more introverted.

They sleep in the same bed - eat and drink lots - and are very healthy. I have a feeling that Trixie may just be in heat.

Would appreciate any advise. When I used to have snakes, i would let one just sleep in bed with me when this happened, but I don't think that would be suitable with guinea pigs. Lol.

Kindest,

Elt x

Probably the frisky girl is in season, which happens around every 16 days. Possibly the situation might reverse when your other lady is in season! We adopted a little husboar and had him neutered to join our teenage girls and diffuse a bit of sexual tension when one of our first pair of ladies started acting like this a lot. Which worked well for us, but not all the ladies appreciate a husboar- we now also have one maiden aunty who isnt interested in that sort of thing at all, and 2 ladies who seem to prefer each other to the husboar!
The good news is it should all calm down in 24 hours or so... until the next season! But some seasons are stronger than others and some ladies are less hormonal than others, we have one scary hormonal lady but not every season, sometimes she can be ok, sometimes not.
Hope this helps! But @Wiebke is the resident expert on piggy behaviour so she might advise further :)

Hi!

Sows can experience very strong seasons roughly every 2 weeks. Please sit it out; it should be over in another day. Do NOT separate. Unlike you, the girls know what they are about and it is not compromising their bond (unlike a separation).

Take the time to read and watch these links, so you know better what to expect with sows and what the various social behaviours mean. They have a much more active and complex social life as a species than most people expect from what they only see as an animated cuddly pet. It is well worth reading these links as you'll worry less and can judge much better what is going on. ')

One is a boy - one is a girl. Thomas was a boy - Bob was a girl. I changed them both to Trixie and Elvira (Trixie after my favourite drag queen) and ElVira after Cassandra peterson.

Thank you Wiebke for your links and everyone for your help and advice.

Is Trixie/Thomas neutered or not?

Boars will mount and chase sows when they come into season, but a sow experiencing a strong season can occasionally also mount a boar before she is ready for mating at the end of her season.

If you are using unusual names for your piggies that can give rise to confusion, please make sure that you mention the gender of the piggies involved as - like in this case - you may not necessarily get the correct answers. Dynamics between boar only, sow only and mixed gender pairs differ quite considerably!

Ah yes, that makes sense, Trixie is in season and although ElVira has been neutered he does not know that so normal relations are taking place, although she’s obviously that interested x

This is normal, just leave them to get on with it. it won’t last long x

I've booked a vet appointment this week to get everything double checked and make sure I have not made a complete mistake with the neutering details. Trixie is DEFINITELY neuteured.

Thank you for all your help!
