Had an absolutely horrific morning, I was on the phone to my nana this morning when I heard my dog barking, so I went through to investigate as I got closer I could hear a pig squealing so I ran through and my dog was in the corner of the room trying to get at Marley who was crying in the corner. I grabbed digger by the scruff of his neck to get him off and threw him outside and picked up Marley he was very wet, shook up but when I checked him over he seemed fine. I held him whilst I checked the area. I really dont know how he got in the room :( and how he managed to get him out of the cage... I'm so perplexed and horrified. My grandparents are bringing locks and door chains with them and we are going to make them even more secure. I'm so upset at what has happened I've been so lucky. Any body got any advice as to what to do with Marley etc like relax him I'm so flustered I just don't know what to do. Cried so much

Thank goodness he is ok. When my dog got in the room with ours and tried to get them, but lucklily didn't, I noticed an awful smell from the guinea pigs.
Hope he stays quiet and makes a full recovery.

he needs somewhere dark and quiet to calm down, with some hay and water so he can munch and drink when he feels up to it. Check for any wounds but be careful while handling incase of brusing and of course if you are able to I would advise a trip to the vets for a check over to make sure no damage has been done.

And mostly of all, you need to calm down, have a cup of tea (with or without brandy in it) and forgive the dog.

Have a look for any obvious access points where digger can have squeezed or jumped through, given enough motivation it can be amazing just how they can get in somewhere they shouldnt. I would suggest a baby gate if you dont already have one on the door as extra security and keep it closed and locked even with the door shut. Presume the dog is always going to be around you and think of ways to prevent accidental meetings again, a bolt sounds a good idea, at above your head height (I am assuming the dog is meduim to small sized, but as I say, enough motivation can create amazing feats of dexterity and climbing)

Marley has been very lucky :...

If he's ok now, he'll probably be fine. I'm assuming you've checked him over for wounds or other obvious injuries?

I'd leave him quiet, plenty of dark places to hide, cover the front of the cage if necessary.

Oh hun :( At least Marley is ok. The best thing you can do is leave him be in a quiet area with hideys then when he has perked up a bit, give him a cuddle and a treat. Make sure he knows he's still safe :) Big hugs from me for Marley. Peanut & Crumpet send piggy love xoxo

I have checked him over and there are no obvious injuries. So I will keep an eye on him and if I notice anything I will take him to the vets. I've covered the cage and she's with her sister and other friend Bowie. Marley and zeppelin are young and Bowies a bit older so she's mothering her. I've had 4 cups of tea so far! The only way I can see that he has got in, is by opening the door (god knows how) and my cage has a slide bottom and I think he has pulled on it and it's slid a bit and marley has fell out the back. We are getting everything possible to secure it! He's a beagle so hunting is in his nature. I'm lucky he only seemed to have slavered on him... x

I really can't believe how lucky he is, that digger only seemed to have slavered on him... He's got no injuries at all thank god!

He seems to be fine now thank god! He's chilling with his sister and roomie, marley says thank you for the cuddles and piggie love x

Massive hugs Aimee, glad Marley is ok x

OMG what a shock you must have got! And Marley too. I'm really glad he seems okay and agree with the others in giving him time and space to relax and calm down.

My piggies are upstairs and I have a stair gate so the dogs cant go upstairs. I dont necessarily think they'd hurt the piggies but you never know...they are dogs after all. All you can do is make the place as secure as possible - once a dog has something in its mind it can make it all the more determined.

Glad everything has turned out fine in the end and its all a good warning to all of us to be extra careful so thanks for sharing .... and go have another cup of tea :))

xx

I'm glad the piggy appears unharmed, that's a reet Cumbrian phrase - slavered! It's been a while since I was slavered on! :)) :)) :))

sounds like digger was following his natural instincts, he wont have done anything other than mouthed and barked - they are soft mouthed on the whole and being a scent hound the first thing would have been to find and alert you to the location of his new toy, thankfully he isnt a sighthound which could have ended worse.

awww poor marley, glad he's ok, must have been an awful shock for all involved.
Here's hoping your new security measures are Digger proof!

Hello Glynis, marley is doing just fine, she's back to her normal self :) :)
Marley says wheeeeeeeek!
I think what's happened is that digger has got in the room somehow, and our cage for the three pale ladies hehe has a sliding bottom so I think digger has been pulling the bottom and Marley has fell out the back. Digg hasn't bothered the cage or room since. Xxxxxxxxxx

Oh my god, Poor you! I had this happen before only it was with a golden retriver and he got my hamster...Needless to say it didn't end well.
Its a good thing that you got Marley in time.
I hope everything works out and that your piggie is okay :...
