Hey all,

Yet another issue has arisen!

Just for some background info just in case, my current old lady pig had a companion who wasn't well, ended up dying from what was likely to be a respiritory issue.
I had another to attempt to replace this guinea pig, she had to be PTS due to lungs filling with fluid from a probable heart disease or tumours.

I now have a very lively baby guinea pig living with my 5 year old, old lady pig.

Lately I have noticed Tabby (old lady pig) sleeping a lot, when she isn't sleeping, she's eating absolutely fine or attempting to dominate the new pig Oxford.

When I pick her up, she gets very hot, very quickly and lies down on me sort of "panting", not like a dog, just breathing heavier than usual, normally she talks no end to me, but she doesn't seem to have much to say any more.

She isn't wheezing from what I can hear, no clicky breathing and when she does talk to me, it sounds normal.

She weighs just over 1100g, she has cystic ovaries but last check up a week or so ago the vet said he wasn't worried, they weren't getting any bigger. She also has some fat lumps she's carrying around, but again, nothing serious.
No doubt, this may end up being yet another vet trip, but any light that could be shed on this would be great, is she just old and knackered chasing around a 11 month old guinea? Over weight? I know there's a chance of respiritory issues but the lack of clicking, wheeziness, mucusy nose, cough or sneezing makes me think that isn't the case. No pain when I press her tummy/abdomen and she seems to move around fine when she's rumble strutting after Oxford.

Could she just be getting too hot? Our house rarely reaches room temperature, usually over 15 degrees however. Maybe stress of having the new guinea around?

:( I'm pretty concerned, I've lost two guineas in one month and I'm not sure if I can handle yet another loss.

Hi there,
The hearthside is not my strongest point compared to some owners here, I was just wondering if there is the possibility of something being passed on to Tabby i.e. bedding, housing etc. I could be totally wrong of course but I'm just thinking as humans we pass on colds to one another...could the same be for piggies.
Hope that someone comes along and maybe able to help more.

I would recommend to have her vet checked. It can be her ovaries or her heart; especially if her sides are heaving? A lively youngster is going to tire her out more, but the stress of losing her companion can bring to the fore any underlying health problems. That is not uncommon with older guinea pigs.

Sometimes ovarian cysts can affect organs as they grow so it is possible that they could be the cause but as others have said it is best to get her checked out. Heart issues are also a possibility, I have a few pigs on medication for heart issues so let me know if you have any questions or need to know any other symptoms to look out for or mention to the vet.
