In my Guinea Pig's shed mainly! LOL
I think this falls under this topic, as it is to do with Guinea Pig health. :p

So, today it's quite a hot day, with a slight breeze. I went into the pig's shed at like 10:30am, and it was humid! The air was quite..still, if you understand me. And I was working up a sweat quite fast. I'd already been in to them at around 8ish, and the temperature was normal.

So, I decided to get the pigs out in the run, and move the run behind the garage so it's in deep shade. They were outside for around 1 hour - 2 hours, and now I've brought them back it.

The air is still quite hot, but I've managed to find a big fan which has been going since I put them out. It's sorta cooling the air, I guess... but don't worry, it's not pointed directly at them, it's up to the roof on a slant, so they get a very slight breeze from it, and I've also got the door open.

All three pigs are completely lounged flat out, bless them. I just feel so sorry for them!

Has anyone got any good ideas I can do/use to keep them cool during the day, that don't require my supervision? Because when I go back to school, I can't exactly leave the door open and have a fan on, for multiple reasons.:{
And I certainly don't want them to get heatstroke!

Thanks guys, you're really helping me and my pigs out a lot here! :(|) :<> x

Would those freezer block things help? Obviously wrapped in something so they dont lay directly on them, I'm not sure if you could chill the water bottle to keep the water cooler, erm I'm not much help at all am I lol, I hope someone can give you some good tips though xx

Yeah, I'm going to try freezing two bottles of water, then wrapping them in a towel and putting them in for the pigs to lie on. Hope it works, thanks for the advice. :) xx

Mine have frozen water bottles in socks & all will lay next to them to keep cool, they're not daft :)

I have put rock sulphur in the water bottle as well as freezing a small hot water bottle.

This is a helpful thread, as are the other links, because I was just outside and wondering what I will do if this heat wave does happen!

Right now, my pigs are out in the run with white towels draped over the hutches for shade, and lots of water. I'm collecting water bottles to freeze and I need to persuade someone to let me have their socks...

They all live outside and I'm really worried about them getting too hot!

I have a couple of cage fans on my hutches, the one pig loves to lie right in front of it but they are not very strong, so he's ok.
I put them on in the morning and they do help.

Mine live in a shed, but the temperature still gets quite humid! When I checked them at early morning yesterday, the air was hot and lingering. It was horrible. So I put them out in the run in the shade whilst I tried to cool the shed with a fan and the door wide open.
The temperature was okay, and then at around 6-ish it started to be nice and cool, and the pigs perked up.

But like I said, I'm worried for when I go back to school... :{

I have a small fan in the shed, but I don't point it directly at them because of drafts.
It does seem to have a small effect, but it works even better when I leave the door open to let in even more breeze. 8;)

The only thing is the flies! Urgh.. it took me 15 minutes yesterday to get a moth out! I was fluttering about in the back of the hutch?!?! pow-pow
I couldn't bare to hurt it, though, I had to put a cup over it and let it fly away. :p

can you open the windows and doors in the shed and maybe cover it with some kind of mesh to stop other animals from getting inside? do your pigs live free range in the shed or are they in hutches? if they are in hutched i would just leave open all the doors and windows

Okay, so last night I put in a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel, so keep them cool, and had the fan on until late, until I went to bed. zzz

When I got up this morning, the shed was pretty cool... I think it's just mostly during the day.

I'm hoping to go to pets at home soon, to buy a Chinchilla tile.. hope it'll benefit them. :<>
Also, I'm going to put in some water bottles during the day. In the freezer as I speak. 8:)

Thanks for all the advice, but people can keep writing their own opinions.. we can never have to much knowledge! :(|) :(|)

The window doesn't open unfortunatily. :{ Yeah, I was wanting to get a mesh door - but I'm sick of all the flies!

My pigs live in this -

Then I have a section at the front where I sit with supplies, so they aren't caged in, but aren't running all around. Although it wouldn't safe to open the door haha. :(

I use a tile that was left over from when we did our bathrooms, they lie on it and when they've cooled down move off, i take it out twice daily and wipe it over (they still manage to pee and poop on them!) If you're worried just put a little bit of hay over the top, they'll move it off if they want too :)

The weather seems to have cooled down a bit now - but I'm going to get a chinchilla tile soon, and yeah you're right.. they can move off it if they want to haha. :p :)) Thank you. xx>>>

It's a real worry, isn't it?

I leave the bedroom window open for mine but my dad gets home from work shortly after I leave and he hates windows being open...So he closes it right up! And by the time I get in from work, my boys are passed out and baking hot!

I've been doing the ol' frozen water bottle inside a sock trick. Last night in desperation I used a freezer block, you know those things you freeze and then put in picnic bags? and got that inside a sock and put it in the cage while re-freezing some more bottles.

My poor boys have been roasting lately. No matter what I say, my dad won't leave the bedroom window open for them! He thinks it lets dust in and makes the whole house dirty and smelly (He's a bit OCD with...well...The house in general, really.) and that people will also break in :{ they'd have to climb over our prison fence first!

Hot weather is such a bother and I broke the run so I can't let then outside :( so they're stuck inside and this house is like an oven in the summer!

Oww. :( I got a Chinchiller marble thingy today, that I'm gunna' put in the freezer, and will hopefully keep them nice and cool whilst I'm away.
It's pretty more the same for me, expect I can't leave a fan on in case "it causes a fire", but I was like, it's been on all day before with my there, and it never caught fire... just because I'm not there doesn't mean it's going to light up! :p
