Hello! I am a new guinea pig mom of two males and it's getting pretty hot where we live. This is the first summer we have hit 100 degrees. Luckily I have had a couple of days off work so I can monitor my piggies closely. I go back to work tomorrow and wanted to know what I could do to keep them cool throughout my shift? So far, I keep a dampen towel over their cage (not dripping water), an ice pack wrapped by a towel, and two fans running continuously on the ground while their cage is sitting on top of a table (about 2.5-3 ft up) along with their daily cool veggies. If I did all these things tomorrow, would they be okay if the weather were to increase while I'm gone? Thanks for any advice in advance!
Also, I read that it is ok to let your guinea in a little water if it gets too hot and they have signs of a heat stroke and to make sure to completely dry them off, but is it ok to do so if they are lethargic and not motivated to eat veggies as well?

You’ve got some good strategies already to keep them cool. Please don’t put them in water though. Have a read of the guide below and see if there’s anything else you could do. Some members have also been known to hang a dampened sheet on a closed window. Also keeping the curtains/blinds closed helps.

The temptation to overfeed watery veg and fruit in hot weather!
Thank you! I was also wondering if ts okay if one of my guniea pigs start to close their eyes slightly? they are eating and drinking water except one of them, when he's sitting around, will close his eyes, it doesn't look like his eyes are receding and when I pet him he opens his eyes more to be alert. Is it normal for him to close his eyes a little?

Does he do it when he’s resting? And does his eye(s) look normal - not squinted?

He does it while he is resting and they're not super closed as if he's squinting but more like he's glaring if that makes sense. It doesn't look like his eyes are receding either just not as open as they usually are!

Often they will sleep with their eyes open, but if they feel very safe and relaxed, then they will close them a little or sleep with their eyes fully closed.
Anything else - any signs of injury, excessive watering, overly dry, cloudiness in the eyes etc - then a vet check is needed.
