Can somebody tell me if the bottles in the hot weather, should be plastic or glass. Also are the tiles got to be the uneven ones & do they need to go under the fleece. Regarding the fans should they be the table type or tower ones? Being a first time mum, I want to get this right.

Please keep any bottles our of direct sunlight if possible and refresh the water frequently, as much as you can during the day. You can buy sleeves for bottles in pet shops that help to slow down the build-up of algae in bottles. The material of a bottle is not so important. personally, I find Sippy bottles currently the best product on the market.

Tiles can be glazed and for best effect, they should be there for the piggies to lie on them directly, as they suck the heat away from the body as long as they are not in direct sunlight. If you live in a hot climate, towel-wrapped cooling gel bags or bricks that you can put in the freezer can also help cool down the air in the cage. The same goes for a water bottle (allow for the frozen water to expand).

Make sure that the airstream from any fan (doesn't matter which kind), is not aimed directly at a cage at close range. Generally, the advice is to place a fan close to window in the shade to encourage cooler air into the room. Make sure that the windows in full sun are closed (with only a slit for slight air movement) and shaded by shutters or curtains. Any outdoors guinea pigs need to be in the shade of a tree or high fence (that includes any hutches - guinea pigs and rabbits can die in a hutch!) and away from heat traps like a patio, ideally in the coolest place in your garden. For indoors guinea pigs, how far down you can get the room temperature overnight and in the early morning is crucial.
