Houdini's dying....

Houdini has been hooting all week, he went to the vets but the vet checked him and said nothing was wrong other than the spur in his teeth. The vet's an exotics vet and I've always taken my boys to him. Houdini came home on thursday after having a spur removed from his tooth and didn't make the noise for two days. He ate all of his food as normal and was active like he's always been. Then today in the last few hours he's started hooting again, the sound is horrible, it sounds like his lungs crackling and that is where all of the sound is coming from. I'm so so scared, I can't go back to the vets because I've already been to him twice this week and he still insists there is nothing wrong with Houdini. Going back now would be pointless and too late in the day, there are no other exotics vets anywhere nearby and I'm home all alone, my mother is out and won't be home for another 6 hours and I don't have a car or license. And if I even could get to the vet, I just know I would be told nothing is wrong again. I know he's dying and I feel so helpless, I feel like I've failed because last month was the anniversary of a year since I got him and his friend Picasso. I really don't know what to do anymore...I've lost all hope I had...

Oh love i'm so so sorry to hear this :(
Have you any meds for Houdini at all? was he given URI drugs?
Heart problems are a sign of hooting too, i read a post recently about this :(
Keep Houdini warm and comfortable, maybe a little metacam to ease any pain perhaps?
Our thoughts are with you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Could you go to another vet for a second opinion? We have a list of vets up the top of Health and Illness, you might find one there who can help you.

I have moved this into health and illness as it will get seen better.

Sorry about your little man, hope he pulls through. I would try the vets again as he might just need some anti biotics to help with a chest infection or something quite simple.

Good luck with him our thoughts are with you.

Go to the vets and get a second opinion. Then insist on antibiotics. Is he still eating? This is a good sign. Get the vet to check the piggy's lungs. Stamp you feet and be firm but insistent.

Big hugs to you and Houdini xx

Something that might help is Sudafed Expectorant - you can buy it in chemists, supermarkets etc., the orange and white Sudafed bottle. It may not clear the problem for good, but it's certainly better than nothing and helped the hooting in my own pigs when they suffered with it due to allergies.

Dose for an adult pig (over 6 months) is 0.4ml once a day (or 0.2ml twice a day).

Whereabouts are you - maybe someone on the forum will know of a good vet near you?

I'm sorry to hear about Houdini :( Just because you have already been to the vets twice in a week, doesn't mean that you can't go again. He is YOUR guinea pig and you know if he is ill or not. Like others have suggested, stamp your feet if you have too. If he has a URI a course of baytril should do the trick. Good luck x
