If you keep your guinea pigs in a shed do they have to be in a hutch or could they be in an indoor cage with blankets over it at night?

A hutch would be best. A hutch offers a layer of protection from predators, should something manage to get into the shed. Also, unless your shed is heated and insulated, an indoor cage with blankets will be much less likely to keep them warm in winter.

My boys live in a hutch in my shed. The shed isnt heated but it is insulated.
To keep them warm enough they have thermal hutch cover, two blankets, a normal hutch cover, and then a duvet over all of it. The hutch is stuffed full with hay and they have four snugglesafe heat pads. I still have a backup plan to bring them into the house if my warming measures fail (which has happened once)

When I had piggies, my shed had electric fitted so I had light and heating. They were spoilt. 👍

Not at all, it was an oil filled radiator so it was perfectly safe, there were no naked heat sources.
