I buy timothy hay from oxbow in big amounts, usually 15 pounds each time. I put as much as I can fit into a bin with a lid, and I also put the rest in my basement in the box. I go to refill my bin and the hay is really dried out compared to before. Is there any way to prevent this or is it completely normal?

Hay needs to be kept in a cool dry place and preferably not in plastic as it can sweat and go mouldy.
Ive never had hay get drier as it doesn’t last long enough to deteriorate and I buy 15kg (seems to convert to 33lbs) at a time

Okay, thank you. I think the problem is that it's not very dry as my basement can get pretty moist. Thanks again!

If the basement is moist, then I wonder how the hay would get drier - it’s more at risk of being damp and going mouldy (which would mean it would all need to be thrown out)

How many piggies do you have?
15 kgs is not a huge amount of hay, so should store quite easily for a month or so before you feed it to your piggies.

I really don't know to be honest, I may just try to store it in a new area!

If you’re buying 15 lbs of hay at a time, that equates to 6kg. How long does that last for you?
5kg of hay only lasts for one week for me so it wouldn’t have chance to deteriorate!

I actually think it was 25. My bad. I have gotten 50 before but it tends to be a better deal to get the 25. I will have to find my info on how much pounds it is. I used to but in store but figured out it is a lot easier and cheaper to buy online, I will have to get back to you on the definite answer of how much pounds it is!

Hay is generally dry. At least it shouldn’t be damp at all. Do you mean it’s getting damp?

I apologize if I'm being confusing but I figured out how to keep it from drying out, I moved it to a different area. Thank u all

Hay is already dry. It needs to be kept cool and dry. If you keep it in direct sun it will go brown and deteriorate. It’s getting damp by being kept in a moist area or being kept in plastic bags so it sweats which is a problem, not being dry
