I can't believe I am telling you this after my lovely Lenny died just 4 days ago but Bing (the girl we all thought was a boy) has just had a stroke. I know this is what it is as Lenny had one in September and it is exactly the same. I phoned the emergency vet and they have said that there is very little they can do and to put her in a dark quiet place and keep her comfortable and warm. She will either pull through or not. This is the same thing they told me when Lenny had a stroke and he did pull through.

She is in a box on her own with fleece bottom and fluffy towels as blankets and the room is quiet and dark. Any other tips from anyone please ?

Bing is only 18 months old :0

i'm afraid i'm not much help. only one of my pigs matilda has suffered with a stroke- we took her straight to the vets but she died in my arms on the way there.
i'd just suggest doing what the vets have recommended. although idk whether it'd be better for you to leave her alone or sit with her and give her a cuddle? my vet told me when we took matilda in that although she died she would have known it was me and felt comforted that i was cuddling her. i think someone more experienced with this type of problem can probably help you better than me, but i really hope she pulls through and gets better soon *hugs*

I'm sorry you are facing problems with another piggie so soon after losing poor Lenny. I have no other advice for you aside from the usual, make sure she is eating, drinking etc. Sending lots of hugs and good wishes for you and Bing. x

Oh poor Bing. The darkened room is best and if she survives the next few hours I would start syringe feeding. peter Guerney says to put pig on a quarter of an asprin for a week to thin down blood. :)

I didn't know that about the aspirin...thanks.

I am trying to be near Bing but not too intrusive if you know what I mean. I looked in 10 minutes ago and she was having these major fit like things and I thought that it would be the end for her so I went to pick her up to cuddle her but she squeaked so obviously it was uncomfortable so I left her and stroked her head gently instead. It is really distressing to watch. I think it is looking bad as Lenny didn't have any fits or anything after his stroke so I am thinking this is not a good sign.

I am so sorry! Keep on giving her love and stroking her gently - I can't offer you useful advice apart from letting he know that you are with her.

IOh poor bing, will keep her in my thoughts today. The next few hours are crucial. Keep us posted. (((hugs))) can't be easy what with loosing gorgeous Lenny earlier this week. x

Bing had a terrible morning she was very unwell. Looked in on her later and I thought I would tempt her with food and she is eating :)

Her head is well tilted to one side and she is still blind but she ate some nugets and hay and cucumber and carrot and cabbage and lettuce. Only small amount but she is eating :):):)

Is it too early for me to hope she will be okay ?

How's she doing now? Head tilt is 'usual' after a stroke, it's a good sign that she's eating. One of mine had fits like you describe, it's very distressing to watch but I don't think they are aware of what's happening at that point.

Fingers crossed for Bing

Sophie

A stroke can be caused either by a blood clot or a haemorrhage. An dose of aspirin could make matters worse if it is a haemorrhage.

On the topic of cause ...... is there anything that I could have done (or not done) that would cause strokes ?

It's just I've had 2 pigs have strokes within 6 months. Mind you Lenny was older but Bing is only 18 months old.

Am I just unlucky or is it something else ?

Have just been in to see to her and she is about the same as before.

She is eating small amounts. Just given her some pellets and cucumber. Earlier I left 10 pellets 3 tiny pieces of cabbage and some hay and lettuce. The reason I counted it all out is so I can see how much she is eating.

When I just went in it was all gone so somehow she has manage to move herself to get the food. Problem is she is so severely bent around to the right that she can't lift her head. She can only move in a circle. I am hoping that overnight she will improve.

Strokes happen, nothing you can do beforehand.
Continue to keep her warm, quiet and hydrated. The head tilt often improves. The prognosis is not good, however I have found that the life expectancy is greater with a stroke than with a (possible) heart attack.

How is Bing this morning? Hoping she is comfortable and starting to eat a bit more. x

I hope I am not getting too optimistic but she seems much perkier and her head tilt has lessened a lot. Still cannot get her to drink water so am giving her watery things to eat like cucumber. Actually the only things I can get her to eat is cucumber, spinach and nuggets.......

Of course I forgot to add that I am holding her up at one side all the time but she is getting stronger in holding herself up.

Bless her, what a pretty little piggie. Your update does sound promising, I hope she gradually picks up throughout the coming days and keeps getting stronger. I'm know Lenny will be by her side, rooting for her and encouraging her to stay strong and keep fighting. x

OMG i've just caught up.........oh heck (language was worse here believe me........dam it) i can't believe your luck.....and yes it's just bad luck i know you'd be feeding and giving all the very best of foods etc.......oh darling i'm so so sorry........
Hey little Bing i do hope today will be a better day, some little friends here in OZ are sending you girly wheeeeeeeks of love and healing ones too and me sending so much loves xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Love i'm just hoping this is a stroke and that somehow she pulls thru, give her loads of loves and foods and let her know that her family here on the forum are all pulling for her xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Have to add that is a sweeeeeet piccie of her with the cucumber awwwwwwwww bless her xxxxxxxxxx

Just a quick update on Bing...

Her head tilt has improved a lot and she is eating reasonably well. I have been syringe feeding her to top up her food now that I know that she can swallow but she will still not take water. I have been giving her loads of cucumber to get water into her.

She is looking as good as I would expect tonight. She has lost weight but that is only to be expected.

I am crossing everything but she does seem much more 'normal' today :)

Thanks for the update on her, I was thinking about her yesterday and hoping she was okay. I'm glad she is improving. Keep going Bing! x

Hope she gets better soon as it is awful when piggies are poorly. i know you cannot rest until they are better. best wishes xx

Please please please let this be true...

Put Bing back in her cage with her daughters (and the troublesome Tribbles !) and she had a good move around and she can walk unaided really well considering. She had a good old wander and then settled down with only a teeny weeny bit of head tilt.

She's still not eating properly or drinking but she has gained weight (only 10 grams but it's better than her losing more weight).

Do you think I should leave her in the cage with her pals or take her out after a while for a rest in the hospital box ?

She looks SO much better this morning :)
