How can this be happening ? Another piggy sick !

I am syringe feeding her as she just wasn't eating enough but she had a good couple of 'meals' yesterday hence the increase in weight I think. I do think I will have to keep up with the syringe feeding for a little while yet.

But all things considered I think she is doing great :)

I agree with Boris' mum (sorry - don't know your name!), I think it would certainly do her good to keep popping in for visits with her friends. You could see how she does in the main group for long periods, but I think while she is still recovering either settling her with one good friend, or a few good visits to the others each day, could well help her recovery.

I love Peter Gurney... his books are like my bibles for guinea pig care... but just like the bible, there are still things that are open to discussion.

NO ASPRIN!!

I cannot repeat this enough... NO ASPRIN.

It was confirmed a couple of years ago that it permanently damages, or completely shuts down their liver and kidneys.

I had a lethal (white, pink eyes... and although they are the most loving of all guinea pigs, they always come with health problems) and fed him 1/4 aspirin when he was ill... and I think it killed him. He died not even an hour later.

Same with pseudoephedrine (nyquil). He mentioned it in his book, and it's not very good to give them.

The best course of action is to take them to an experienced vet. Preferably an exotics vet.

My vet test is one question: "What will you do, give [him/her] some type of penicillin?" If they say, "yes"... then run for the hills.

Anything "cillin" amoxacillin, et al. is like giving your pig an injection of battery acid. Instant death.

Also, make sure all foods you feed have NO MOLD on them. Apples especially. Veggies that have been in the fridge, or on the counter wet should always be re-washed, too.

Good luck with your baby Bing. I've been there, and all you can do is your best to be attentive and to comfort. And ALWAYS ask before you act, and wait for several replies before acting. It could make a big difference.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong...isn't pseudoephedrine the active ingredient in products like infant cough medicines/decongestants such as Sudafed? Just wondering if it's the same or just similar.

Good news .... I think.

Bing is looking so much better. Devouring the syringe feeds and moving around so much better. She is enjoying her visits to her girls but then seems to appreciate the quiet and calm of her hospital box. Her head tilt has almost gone.

I am hopeful that she will make a full recovery. Her eyesight is back too.

I'll try to find the actual source for you, but the gist of it was that there's a little bit of toxcicity in aspirin - and in a perfectly healthy guinea pig, a 1/4 dose probably won't affect them at all. But you're not going to dose a healthy piggy, you're going to dose a sick piggy - and you're going to dose them multiple times, possibly for a week or so if they are recovering from an illness or injury - the immune system notices this toxin has been added to the body and shuts the organs down do they don't get over-toxified while sick.

In doing so, unfortunately, the rest of the body cannot operate and the piggy dies.

Carprofen (Rimadyl) or Ibuprofen are better substitutes. The best choice is always for an experienced exotics vet to prescribe them a pain killer. In doing so, they will never give you aspirin - so that should say something about it's efficacy.

I will never trust aspirin again. It's just not worth the risk.
 
Bing is steadily getting better each day which is great but I now have a dilemma....

I got Tribbles a while back and she lives with Bing and her 2 daughters. I had noticed that Tribbles was being troublesome and causing a bit of havoc in the cage but nothing too serious I thought. Anyway I have been giving Bing supervised time in the cage with the others and almost every time I do there is a sort of cafuffle. Last 2 times Bing has ended up screaming and I've had to remover her and she was crying. Today tried again and again I had to remove her screaming. Tribbles is the culprit...she is nipping the others I think. Anyway this time I removed Tribbles and .....

complete harmony is restored to the cage. Bing is back with her girls and seems happier and is able to move around which I feel is important. However Tribbles is sulking and hiding underneath the vet bed of the temp box I've put her in and wont come out. Obviously I cannot leave Tribbles in this little hospital box for long but I would like to leave Bing in her home. Long term what can I do with Tribbles ? She is a demon. When I was cuddling her today she nipped my boobs.... she is truly horrible....but I do still love her and she is still very young. Should I get another cage and another girl pig as company for her or is there anything I can do to reintegrate them all although it has to be said that looking back it would seem they were never harmonious.

Do you think that it is remotely possible that the stress of being persecuted by Tribbles is what could have caused Bing to have a Stroke ?
